Martins Pildavs broke the school record in the javelin with throw of 73.32 meters
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – It didn't take long for the Troy University men's track and field program to make a splash in the national headlines during the first week of national competition in the outdoor season.
Junior Martins Pildavs (Murjani, Latvia/Cloud County CC) made history on his first throw at the Division I level on Saturday at the Southern Invitational, on the campus of Birmingham-Southern College.
The anticipation was high coming in for the junior college transfer as he won the Junior College national championship last season in the javelin. After having to endure the indoor season with training, Pildavs stepped up to the spotlight on Saturday afternoon.
Pildavs not only made school history, but made his mark in the NCAA ranks this season. He broke the school record in the event – a mark that was broken last season by a teammate this season, Matt Braswell – with a mark of 73.32 meters. The mark is also the best in the NCAA ranks this season in the first week of the outdoor season, and would have been the third-best throw in the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships last season.
The mark is also a new personal best in the javelin for Pildavs, as he threw 71.27 meters last season at Cloud County Community College. Pildavs come from track and field genes, as his father served on the Latvia Olympic team in the javelin and multi-events.
The junior and the rest of the Trojans will be back in action next weekend in Atlanta at the Morehouse Relays and Combined Events.
Full results from the Southern Invitational will be posted on TroyTrojans.com.
