JONESBORO, Ark. - The Sun Belt Indoor Sun Belt Conference Championships got underway Sunday on the campus of Arkansas State University, and the Trojans enjoyed success on the opening day of the meet.
“Currently the team is in eight place but considering our qualifiers and our final events that lie ahead the team has a great opportunity to close the gap on the team scores,” Director of Track and Field/Cross Country Jill Lancaster said.
“The spirits are high among our team and we expect to finisher higher than the ranking lists predicted, I could not be more proud of our team's efforts today.”
The first part of the day brought Troy a fifth-place finish in the high jump from Veronica Bryant as she finished with a height of 1.65 meters. The jump beat the mark she set in last year's championship.
Karen Wyatt continued her impressive freshman season with a fourth-place finish in the shot put with a throw of 13.31 meters, a three-foot improvement on her former personal best. Brynn Forsythe claimed 10th in the shot put with a throw of 12.27 meters, and Nicole Studstill finished 11th in the same event with a throw of 12.18 meters.
The afternoon events proved good to the Trojan team as well, with points earned in two events and three event qualifiers for Monday's finals.
Sylvia Chirchir came in with a new personal best in the 3000 meters with her seventh-place finish with a time of 10:19.24. Morgan Paulson also ran in the 3000 meters finishing 14th with a time of 10:56.72.
The distance medley relay team earned points for the team with their eighth-place finish in a time of 12:45.72. Agnes Kapsoiyo, Ariel Cavazos, Catelyn Dake and Sylvia Chirchir, ran for the Trojans.
Ja-Courtney Alexander carried over her success from last year's championship in the preliminary round of her sprint events, recording the second best times of the day in the 200 and 400 meters.
Alexander will be joined in the 400 meters by freshman Amiracle Watson.
Monday's competition will start out early for the Trojans with Veronica Bryant and Adria Hill competing in their first pentathlon, as well as field and jumping events.
The weight throw has been a strong event for the team all season, and points are expected in this event and a repeat of yesterday's success in the shot put.
Three team members will be representing the Trojans in the triple jump this morning, Jasmine Patton, Tiffany Slater and Ashley Hall, with the possibility of points being important.
The afternoon will bring the running events and the conclusion of the championship today.
Agnes Kapsoiyo and Haley Davies will be competing in the one-mile run, with Kapsoiyo continuing on into the 5000 meter with fellow teammates Sylvia Chirchir, Allison Paulson and Morgan Paulson.
The meet will conclude with the 4x400 meter relay, an event where the Trojan team has placed well in the past with a second place finish in last year's championship.
The Trojans currently sit in eighth place going into today's events, eight points separate the team from a fourth place finish and 13 points from a top three finish.
