Sami Ghorbel becomes the first Trojan picked to play for his country in this event
TROY, Ala. – For the first time in the illustrious history of the Troy University men's tennis program, a player has been picked to represent his country at the biggest stage – the Davis Cup.
Freshman Sami Ghorbel (Sfax, Tunisia) was picked by his home country of Tunisia to play in the Davis Cup, where he will be matched up against England. The round of play will take place March 4 through March 6 in Great Britain, and will be played at Bolton Arena – an indoor court.
Ghorbel and is country will be matched up against a country that features the fifth-ranked player in the world, Andy Murray – a two-time finalist at the Australian Open, including this past tournament.
The Davis Cup is a team format, with four singles and one doubles. It will start with two singles on March 4, followed by a doubles match on March 5 and concluding with the final two singles matches on March 6.
“It is a great honor for Sami,” Troy head coach Eric Hayes said. “We are going to miss him in some very important matches, but we do not want to deny him this tremendous opportunity.”
Ghorbel is listed as the youngest player on the Tunisian roster of eligible players for this year's Davis Cup. He is in first year at Troy University, and has already made a name for himself this fall as he won a flight at the Alabama Fall Classic.
So far this season, he has had to play some of the toughest competition the Trojans playing number three singles – as the team has played the toughest schedule in the country to this point, with seven consecutive matches against ranked opponents.
