Troy University head tennis coach Eric Hayes has been in high gear with the Trojans' women's team, training and practicing to prepare for the upcoming season.
“We are very similar to the football program in that we will play anybody, anywhere. That's our philosophy,” Hayes said.
The Trojans open their season this weekend in Tallahassee, Fla., at Florida State. Troy will face Florida, Georgia, Miami, and Georgia Tech at the event. Facing these top 20 teams will be beneficial to the team's growth and development.
“We hope that playing good teams will help us so that, if we don't win conference, we will still have a chance to get an at-large [bid] to the NCAA tournament with a high enough ranking,” Hayes said.
All of the women from last season will be returning, plus they will be adding one to the team. Freshman Spaniard, Candela Munoz Girson is expected to make a big impact on the team as she mixes with returners such as seniors Olfa Dhaoui and Gabriella Veiga.
Hayes says, “The amount of returning players is a strength, heading into the season.”
After finishing fourth in the Sun Belt Conference last year, Hayes wants to pick up where the team left off and continue to get better.
Hayes is taking the team to face some of the most fierce tennis programs in the country. In addition to the tough schedule this weekend, the Trojans are scheduled to face, Georgia, Kansas State, and Auburn throughout the season.
The Trojans are excited about starting their season, and they are ready for their supporters to come out and help pull them to a victory.
