SQUIRE CREEK INTERCOLLEGIATE ROUND TWO RESULTS
RUSTON, La. – The Troy University men's golf team got off to a poor start today at the Squire Creek Intercollegiate and faces an uphill battle on Tuesday in the final round.
The Trojans were in last place in the 13-team event following an opening round score of 311. A 15-shot improvement in the second round, to 296, moved Troy up one spot in the standings going into the final round of play tomorrow.
“It was like the guys were still asleep when the day started,” Trojans coach Matt Terry said. “Once they finally woke up, they started to play better. It was a lot like at the Golfweek Challenge where a really poor first round put us in a big early hole.”
Southern Miss didn't have any opening round problems, posting a 289 through the first 18 holes to take a one-shot lead over Southeastern Louisiana. The Golden Eagles first a first-day low score of 281 in the second round, but managed only to extend their lead by one shot over Southeastern.
The host team from Louisiana Tech is just three shots off the lead after posting scores of 291 and 282.
Scott Kelly of Sam Houston State holds a three-stroke lead in the individual competition of posting scores of 66 and 70 for an eight-under par total. Scott Forgan of Louisiana Tech and Tom Robson of Jacksonville State are tied for second at five-under par.
Freshman Jake Tucker leads Troy after posting a two-over par score of 146. He is tied for 20th.
“Jake had a pretty good day, but we have got to play better up and down the lineup,” Terry said. “We just have to put today behind us and go out tomorrow and not worry about the scores, just focus on playing well.”
