HOPKINSVILLE, Ky. – The Troy University men's golf team struggled with changing weather conditions on Tuesday in the final round of the F&M Bank APSU Intercollegiate, slipping to seventh in the final standings.
The start of the final round of play was delayed by an hour because of lightening, and much cooler and wetter conditions greeted the players when they got on the course at the Links at Novadell. The Trojans, who shared the low team round of the tournament with Samford after a 277 in the second round, struggled to a 299 on Tuesday.
That 20 shot slide was the difference between second place and seventh.
“I am disappointed that the team played so poorly today,” Trojans coach Matt Terry said. “We have a lot of work to do.”
With the exception of senior Ricky Casko, who posted a second straight 69 to finish tied for 10th in the tournament with a four-under par score of 212, the rest of the potential counting players saw their scores increase six to 10 shots over Monday's second round.
“Ricky played well because a 69 was a good round considering the weather conditions,” Terry said.
Only four players in the field bettered Casko's 69 on Tuesday, with the lowest round posted being a 67.
Overall, the host Governors of Austin Peay State took top team and individual honors. APSU posted a 279 in the final round and finished with a team score of 839 for a nine-shot victory over second place Jacksonville State (848).
APSU's Marco Iten took top individual honors in a playoff with Samford's Drew Aimone. Both players finished the event at eight-under par 208, but Iten was able to make up four strokes in the final round thanks to his 69 and a 73 by Aimone.
Trojans freshman Jake Tucker, who went into the final round with a chance at a top five finish, slipped back to a tie for 15th with a final round score of 75. He finished the 54-hole event with a total score of three-under par 213.
“I am proud of Jake for the way he played in this tournament,” Terry said. “Three-under par is a good score even though he didn't get off to the start he needed today.”
Freshman Phillip Brennan, who was playing as an individual, finished tied for 42nd after a final round 76 left him with a four-over par 220 for the event. Another freshman, Tolver Dozier, closed with a 78 and slipped to a tie for 47th with a five-over total of 221.
Sophomore Will Thompson was unable to maintain the momentum from his second round score of 69 and posted a 79 on Tuesday to finish with a six-over par 222 in a tie for 53rd. Freshman Wil Clowdus, playing in his first collegiate event, finished tied for 80th with a score of 14-over par 230.
The Trojans will close out their fall schedule November 7-9 at the Amelia National Intercollegiate, hosted by the University of North Florida, at Fernandina Beach, Fla.
