Second Round 277 Moves Trojans Into Contention

HOPKINSVILLE, Ky. – After posting a respectable 290 in the opening round of the F&M Bank APSU Intercollegiate on Monday, the Troy University men's golf team blistered The Links at Novadell for a 277 in the second round to move within seven shots of the host Austin Peay State Governors.
The tournament will conclude on Tuesday with a final 18 holes of play, starting at 9 a.m.
The 277 for Troy was the lowest round for the Trojans since an opening round 276 at the 2009 Florida State Spring Invitational. Samford (561) posted a matching 277 in the second round and is one shot behind Austin Peay (560). The Governors followed an opening round 279 with a 281 in the second round.
“It was a great second round,” Trojans coach Matt Terry said. “It was nice to see us come to life in that round.”
Jacksonville State, which posted matching 282s in the first two rounds, is four shots behind APSU in third. Troy (567) and Binghamton (569) are both within 10 shots of the lead in the 16-team field.
In addition to the team success, freshman Jake Tucker is tied for second going into the final round on Tuesday after posting scores of 70 and 68 for a six-under par 138. He is tied with Anthony Bradley of Austin Peay, three shots behind Samford's Drew Aimone.
“Jake was bogey free today,” Terry said. “We need him and team to continue their good play from this afternoon tomorrow. I am really proud of the bogey-free two rounds.”
Three Trojans are tied for 23rd entering the final round. Freshman Tolver Dozier (72-71), sophomore Will Thompson (74-69) and senior Ricky Casko (74-69) all posted matching scores of 143.
Freshman Phillip Brennan, playing as an individual, is one shot further back after posting scores of 73-71 for a 144. Another freshman, Will Clowdus, who is playing in his first collegiate event, shot rounds of 75 and 78 for a 153 and is tied for 80th.
