ED TEMPLE CLASSIC
The Troy University track team is looking to kick their 2011 season off on the right foot when they travel to compete in the annual Ed Temple Classic indoor meet, hosted by Tennessee State.
Despite having to shake off the rust of a holiday break and the pressures of starting a fresh academic period, the Trojan track team seeks to gain an advantage from an early season start.
“We find our athletes in a very unique situation,” head coach Jill Lancaster said. “The way the academic calendar fell, the student-athletes are basically out of a normal routine of training for six weeks, from the Thanksgiving holiday until now.
“As a staff, we thought it was important to kick off our indoor season earlier than usual to gauge where we are in our training, coming off the long holiday. We believe there will be vital experience gained in this competition.”
Troy will also be presented with the daunting task of finding experience early in the season for a younger squad. The Trojans will be carrying six freshmen, seven sophomores, one junior and only three seniors to the meet.
“With our team being young, there is another benefit to getting going early, to let them know what collegiate competition is all about,” assistant coach Chip Brundage said. “With the addition of this talent, we look forward to another fantastic year.”
The 2011 indoor track season will begin on Saturday, January 8, with the first events slated for 8:00 a.m. Stay tuned into Troytrojans.com for results throughout the season.
