2010-11 Schedule
TROY, Ala. – Troy University head women's basketball coach Michael Murphy released the 2010-11 basketball schedule Tuesday afternoon, and the schedule includes 14 non-conference games before the beginning of 2011.
The schedule features four teams who made the NCAA Tournament last season, two others who qualified for the WNIT and one other who played in the WBI postseason tournament. The schedule also features 10 non-conference road games, and two contests inside Sartain Hall against in-state competition.
Troy, coming off a 12-17 season in 2009-10, opens the year playing in a tournament hosted by Elon University November 12 and November 14. The Trojans open the year against Stony Brook and Elon, who went a combined 22-39 last season.
However, from that point on, the teams the Trojans face prior to conference season beginning all finished at .500 or better on the season. Troy returns to home to face Jacksonville State, November 17 at Sartain Hall, one of just five home games before the turn of the calendar to 2011.
They will then board a plane headed for Ft. Myers to take on Florida Gulf Coast, a relative new member to the NCAA Division I ranks. Florida Gulf Coast went to the Division II Final Four just a few years ago and made the move to Division I, joining the Atlantic Sun Conference. Since they have been Division I over the last four years, FGCU has won the conference and last season finished 24-7 and went to the WNIT.
Following the road contest, the Trojans return home to face another in-state foe … this one in Birmingham-Southern. After the contest the Panthers, Troy travels north to face Elite Eight participant from a year ago, Xavier. The Musketeers finished 30-4 in 2009-10 and return four of their five starters. The two teams face each other the Friday after Thanksgiving.
The Trojans return home December 1 for three consecutive home games, and open conference play December 1 against WNIT participant WKU. Following the game with the Lady Toppers, the Trojans host Belhaven (December 4) and Florida Gulf Coast (December 11) to close out the home portion of the schedule for 2010.
The most interesting portion of the schedule comes to the Trojans beginning with a game in Jacksonville (Florida) to play in the UNF Holiday Classic on December 17 and 18; before heading back up the coast to face American (22-10 a season ago) in Washington, DC on December 22. During that trip, the Trojans face a team that played in the WBI in UMKC and four teams who finished at .500 or better in 2009-10.
The Trojans wrap up the non-conference portion of the schedule against Hampton December 29 in the Georgia State Tournament. Hampton finished 20-12 last season and made the NCAA Tournament as the MEAC champion. Also in the tournament as possible opponents for the Trojans include Georgia State and Mississippi Valley State.
Following the non-conference portion of the schedule and the turn of the calendar, the Trojans open the conference slate at home against Florida Atlantic January 2; before hitting the road to face Louisiana-Lafayette (January 5) and UALR (January 8) – Sun Belt regular season champions and NCAA participant from a season ago.
The Trojans trade home and away games until February 12 when they face Denver to kick off a three-game home stand. They will also face Middle Tennessee (February 17), an NCAA Tournament participant, and Arkansas State (February 19) to close the home schedule.
Troy ends the season on the road against Florida Atlantic (February 23) and FIU (February 26).
