Seven players were recognized for their efforts over the weekend
TROY, Ala. - The 2010 Trojan Classic was a success for head coach Chris Bentley and the Trojan coaching staff this weekend. The Trojans finished second in the tournament, but the success goes well beyond what was accomplished on the pitch.
Not only was the tournament a success due to the teams participating in it this weekend, but the weather was perfect. The high on Friday reached the mid-90s but on Sunday, the day was perfect. There was no rain throughout the weekend, giving the four teams a great surface to play the matches.
Another reason the tournament went so well for the Trojans were the crowds inside the Trojan Soccer Complex. On Friday afternoon, the Trojans took on Mississippi State in front of a packed house and drew one of the biggest crowds to watch a soccer match. The crowds were good for the other three matches as well.
With the good crowd and the great weather, seven players were recognized for their play throughout the tournament by coaches of the four teams involved. Those players, some of whom may not have been the standout player on the scoresheet, still stood out in the eyes of the other coaches in the tournament.
Morganne Grimes and Leanna Baldner of Mississippi State were among those named the Most Outstanding Players of the Tournament. They were joined by Mary Morris and Ruth Sutcliffe of Troy, Tatiana Ariza and Jocelyn Murdoch of Austin Peay, as well as Jessica Oram of South Alabama.
The Trojans may have finished second in the tournament behind Mississippi State, but the Trojans coaching staff and players have something to hang their hat on for a very successful 2010 Trojan Classic.
