TROY, Ala. – The Troy University soccer team eased their way to a victory in the final game of the 2010 Trojan Classic at the Trojan Soccer Complex, defeating Austin Peay State University 5-2 on Sunday afternoon.
“This tournament really got us used to playing on a Friday and Sunday,” said head coach Chris Bentley. “We had the opportunity to play against two really competitive teams which will prepare us for conference.”
Troy came into the match after struggling against Mississippi State in their first game of the tournament as they lost to the Bulldogs 2-0. Austin Peay entered the match having already beaten South Alabama in the tournament's opening game, extending their winning streak to five to open 2010.
Trojan midfielder, Cecilia Thorngren scored the first goal of the match, and for Troy in the tournament, in the seventh minute as she found the back of the net off of a corner kick. This goal would open up an onslaught for the Trojans as they totaled 11 shots on the day.
Junior forward Mary Morris also hadher chances on Sunday as she put in goal number two for the Trojans off a spectacular assist from teammates Ruth Sutcliffe and Jill Pinder.
Both Thorngren and Morris would later find the net again as they both recorded two goals of the day.

Austin Peay did not give up easily though as Jocelyn Murdoch scored her team's only two of the match.
“We need to get better with dealing with the lead,” said Bentley. "For a two day weekend it was pretty good, but we were making silly errors. Austin Peay should be credited because they were putting us under pressure to make us make mistakes.
"We just have to keep a constant focus for 90 minutes, as we've given up a few mental blunders here and there. But those are easily fixable we just have to keep focus for the whole game.”

Sutcliffe would finally find her mark against Austin Peay as she recorded five shots in the match, and scored off a pass from freshman Maddie Tieken would finally give Sutcliffe her first Trojan goal.
Troy (2-2) would finally give Austin Peay their first loss of the year as they defeated the Lady govs 5-2.
“Our performance was okay,” Bentley said. “We made a lot of young mistakes with game management, and our effort was good given the rebound from Friday. This was a great chance for us to fix things that we've been having issues with, and as we move forward getting some goals on the board were important. Creating opportunities up front and finishing them were very important for us today.”
The home tournament will prepare the Trojans for their next task as they travel to Mobile to compete in the Port City Classic next weekend. Troy soccer will be back in action in Mobile on Sept. 10 as they take on Georgia State.
