Box Score
MOBILE, Ala. – The Troy Trojan soccer team defeated Georgia State 2-0 Friday afternoon in their first match of the Port City Classic, winning their third match in four tries. The win came in the Trojans second tournament in only two weeks.
Troy entered the tournament 2-2 off of a major momentum boost after beating the Austin Peay Lady Govs last week at home, while Georgia State entered the tournament 4-1 from the Colonial Athletic Association conference. This was the first meeting between the two teams since 2004 in which the Trojans defeated the Panthers in double overtime.
“We did a good job in the first half with possession;” head coach Chris Bentley said. “We just could not capitalize every time. We did do a better job creating opportunities and it paid off.”
Troy (3-2) struck first off the foot of freshman Kailani Decock in only the 13th minute. The score would be Decock's first of her collegiate career, and it came from the assist of fellow freshman Cecilia Thorngren.
The Trojans would soon strike again in the first half off the talent of junior Mary Morris, who recorded her fourth goal of the season in the 30th minute.
Although Troy would not find the goal for the remainder of the match, but saw a great defensive effort as junior Ashley Branham would go on to record 11 saves and her first shutout of the season.
“Georgia State played very well and forced us to maintain our shape throughout the entire game,” said Bentley. "Now we just need to rest and prepare for Sam Houston on Sunday.”
The Trojans soccer team will be back in action on Sunday as they take on Sam Houston State in their final game of the Port City Classic at 12 noon.
