After posting the best team scoring average in several year last year, the Troy University women's golf team will open the 2010-11 season this weekend looking to improve and climb the standings in the Sun Belt Conference.
The Trojans will have a chance to see three of the other Sun Belt schools in the opening event of the fall, the Fred Marx Invitational, hosted by ULM at the Bayou DeSiard Country Club in Monroe, La.
“We are excited to get on the road and excited to be going to Bayou DeSiard in Monroe,” Trojans coach Matt Terry said. “It is a course that has been closed for the last year while they have been redoing the greens. We've been over there quite a few times in the past and we are anxious to see what they have done.”
The course was completely renovated in 1988-89 and has been repeatedly ranked as one of the top courses in Louisiana. For the tournament the course will feature a 6,016 yard layout and will play to a par of 72.
The Trojans have six players returning from last year and one newcomer. Seniors Liz Balkcom (Juliette, Ga.) and Annelies Anderson (Ohaupo, New Zealand) will lead the team. Juniors Haley Lawrence (Prattville, Ala.) and Caitlin Rohrbacher (Ocala, Fla.) and sophomores Sofia Bjorkman (Vanersborg, Sweden) and Sara Fennvick (Gothenburg, Sweden) return again this year.
“The ladies are anxious to get out of town to go play,” Terry said. “I feel like we have a good lineup, but we have to get there and see what we can bring to the table once the flag goes up.
“We have a new player in the lineup, Signy Arnorsdottir from Iceland, and we are excited about her. Sofia, Haley, Liz and Annalies will be traveling. We are anxious to get on the road and see what happens.”
The Troy women will play in three events in the first four weeks of the fall season starting at ULM. They will play in a tournament in Bradenton, Fla., the following week before play at Austin Peay the third weekend of October.
The tournament at ULM includes a field of 12 teams, including four from the Sun Belt Conference.
“It should be a good field,” Terry said. Monroe is the host team and South Alabama and Western Kentucky will also be there. There will be quite a few other quality teams. I feel like that if we can get off to a good start in that first round on Monday then we will have a chance to be right in the mix and have a chance to win the golf tournament.”
Others in the tournament field include Centenary, Houston Baptist, Jackson State, McLennan Community College, McNeese State, Northeastern State, Sam Houston State and Stephen F. Austin.
Play will open on Monday with 36 holes of competition starting at 8:30 a.m. The final 18 holes will be played on Tuesday, also starting at 8:30 a.m.
“We need to continue to improve,” Terry said. “Last year we had our best team scoring average since I have been here and we want to continue that right into the fall and spring. The key to doing that is to gain some confidence and have the ladies get a little more bold.”
