Troy Falls to Auburn in Season Opener on The Plains

The Trojans fell in their opening match of the War Eagle Invitational Friday night

AUBURN, Ala. - The Troy University Trojans volleyball team fell in their opening match of the season Friday night to the Auburn Tigers, 3-0 (13-25,13-25, 21-25), at the War Eagle Invitational inside the Student Activities Center.
Troy (0-1) was led by sophomore Devin Von Pingel, who had six kills and a .267 attack percentage. Von Pingel also added seven points to the board throughout the night for the Trojans. Senior Megan Henderson added 15 assists and posted six digs for the Trojans.
In the opening set of the match, the Trojans battled Auburn point-for-point through the first 14 points; trailing only 8-6 after a kill by Brittany McClelland after a feed from Henderson. From that point in the opening set, Auburn went on a 12-4 run to take the first set.
The second set was much the same as Auburn pulled away before Troy battled back midway through the set. The Trojans found themselves trailing 15-8 before getting a kill from Victoria Rogoschewsky and a service ace from Courtney Cohen to trim the deficit to 15-10. Auburn (1-0) scored the next five points to push the lead to 20-10, before the Trojans were able to get a pair of points before the end of the set.
After the intermission, Troy came out rejuvenated in the third set. The Trojans battled Auburn point-for-point in the final set. The two teams found themselves tied 15 times in the set, with seven lead changes.
Troy tied the match at 17-all late in the set, before taking the lead 18-17 on a McClelland service ace. After Auburn tied the match, the Trojans went back ahead 19-18 and then again 20-19. The Trojans fell behind from that point and were able to pull within 22-21, before Auburn scored the final three points of the set to take the match.

Other players who made an impact for the Trojans were junior newcomer Natasha Kolunija, who started all three sets and had five kills and five points. Defensively, sophomore Lizzie Clough was the star, as she recorded a team-high eight digs and one service ace.
The Trojans will continue play in the War Eagle Invitational tournament tomorrow at 11 am against Georgia Southern. They will conclude the tournament on Saturday night, taking on UT-Martin at the Student Activities Center beginning at 5 pm.
