TROY, Ala. - The Troy University volleyball team will head north to Auburn for the weekend to open their season by playing in the War Eagle Invitational.
The Trojans face host Auburn University on Friday, and play Tennessee-Martin and Georgia Southern on Saturday. The volleyball team has been working hard individually and as a team in the off-season in preparation for their season-opener on Friday night.
"I am really excited to get our team on the court this weekend," Troy head coach Sonny Kirkpatrick said. "We are playing a very good team to start off the season, and we know it is going to be a challenge for us in every aspect of the game. It is going to be enjoyable to play someone else besides ourselves for a change."
The Trojans are led by senior setter, Megan Henderson, who has racked up a career total 3,153 assists in three years. Also poised to lead the Trojans this season is junior middle hitter, Brittany McClelland and sophomore outsider hitter, Devin Von Pingel.
McClelland recorded 172 kills and 135 digs for the Trojans in 2009, while Von Pingel posted a team-high 77 blocks and had 219 kills last season.
"Our team has done a great job of preparing themselves both mentally and physically," Kirkpatrick said. "I can't wait to get on the court and see how we progress through the season."
The Trojans will open their season at home on September 4 when they take on Western Illinois at 10 am, as part of the Trojan Spiketacular Tournament.
