Troy assistant coach becomes second coach this season chosen to coach a national team
TROY, Ala. – Troy University women's soccer assistant coach Claire Scanlan has received one of the biggest honors a soccer coach can receive when she was selected as an assistant coach for her country's U17 National Team.
Scanlan will assist the U17 Irish National Team in the U17 World Cup later this year when they travel to Trinidad & Tobago for the tournament.
“It is an amazing honor to represent your country, especially at the World Cup,” Scanlan said. “But, I am also proud to be there representing Troy University.”
The Irish national team is in Group D with teams from Brazil, Canada and Ghana. The winner of the group will face the second place team in Group C in the quarterfinals, while the second place team of the group will face the winner of Group C in the quarterfinals.
This is not the first time for Scanlan to serve on the staff of the Irish national team. She assisted the full women's national team in preparations for World Cup qualifying matches last summer. Scanlan also served as the head coach of Ireland's Under 23 National Team prior to her stint with the U17's .
She is also no stranger to representing her country on the world's biggest stages. As a player, she competed on the Irish National Team for 15 years. She competed in European and World Cup qualifiers and was named the Irish National Team Player of the Year in 1999. She was a nominee for that same award in 2003.
“We are so proud of Claire,” Troy head coach Chris Bentley said. “She represents herself and this University with the utmost class and dignity. This honor could not go to a better person. This is not only amazing for her professional development, but also for the development of our soccer program here at Troy.”
