TROY, Ala. - The Troy University tennis program hosted their first collegiate event in years at the Lunsford Tennis Complex, and were able to walk away with a singles championship courtesy of senior Bastain Maucher.
Maucher, playing the 'B' Draw on the men's side was able to battle the heat, rain and some illness over the weekend to earn the only individual title for the Trojans. The senior made his way to the final with a victory over top-seeded Florent Sentenac of AUM, earning a 6-3, 7-6 victory on Friday. The following day, Maucher defeated teammate Guilherme Sahadi in a hard-fought 6-4, 3-6, 6-2 three-set match to earn the right to play for the title.
In the championship match, Maucher had perhaps his easiest time on the court over the three-day period as he defeated Kennesaw State's Gianni Kubin 6-2, 6-1.
“Bastain really played some outstanding tennis today,” Troy assistant coach Tyler Faulkner said. “He knocked off the kid from Kennesaw State, after battling through some illness over the weekend. He just found a way to battle through it all and play some great tennis.”
The Trojans had an opportunity for another singles championship on Saturday, with three players in the semifinals in the Women's 'B' Draw. Unfortunately the heat caught up with them all in the semifinal round, with both Lauren Simpson and Kelly Irving having to retire in the third set of their matches.
Simpson was able to get to the championship round with a victory over teammate Rosaura Ramirez-Vega in the semifinals, while Irving fell to Whitney Byrd of AUM in three sets. The freshman trailed 5-7, 6-4, 1-4 before retiring in the third set. Byrd also won the championship in the draw as Simpson was forced to retire in the third set of the finals due to heat. Simpson trailed in the match, after winning the first set, 6-2, 3-6, 1-4 before retiring.
“We had a lot of our experienced players on the women's side playing in the top draw,” Faulkner said. “A lot of the new players played in the middle flight, and we did that to see where our experienced players stood and what they could do. It wasn't that the experienced players did poorly, it was just that the freshmen fought really hard and showed a lot of heart and character.
“They fought through some illnesses and injuries, and just kept going. We tried to pull the sick players off the court several times, but they just didn't want to quit. It turns out that Lauren [Simpson] was probably the sickest of them all. She and Kelly had to come out of their matches that they ended up losing. They all just fought hard all weekend.”
The Trojans did capture a consolation final as Maxime Zamora defeated AUM's Frederico Vieira in the championship to earn the victory. Troy also had a chance to win a championship on the doubles side as the team of Karoline Grymel and Leonie Guijt cruised to the finals before falling to Jacksonville's Tatiana Soldatova and Eve Castaing, 8-5.
Although the Trojans didn't walk away with the most titles, the tournament was still a success in the eyes of the Troy coaching staff.
“The weekend went well,” Faulkner said. “We had a little bit of rain on Friday and Saturday which put a little bit of kink on things. Other than that, it went very smooth. The teams played well, both men and women. A lot of the new players, the freshman, showed their value with their play and their leadership so that was a plus. It was a good tournament.”
The Trojans will now rest up and get ready for the Regionals to take place in October.
