NEW ORLEANS, La. - The Troy University men's tennis team defeated Tulane University 4-3 in non-conference tennis action at the Goldring Tennis Center Saturday afternoon, remaining undefeated on the young season.
Troy (2-0), playing in just the second match at the Goldring Tennis Center since Hurricane Katrina hit the Gulf Coast, was able put the match away in four singles matches although they lost the doubles match.
"Tulane came out and played some solid doubles" Troy assistant tennis coach Tyler Faulkner said. "They're well coached and they were aggressive. I was proud how we responded in singles though. Our guys came out and weren't intimidated by being down 1-0. We also fought through some really difficult conditions because it was very cold and windy."
Tulane (1-1) captured the doubles point with victories at number two and three. At number two, the team of Aurelien Tave and Guilherme Sahadi fell to the Green Wave team of Adam Bernstein and Rodrigo Rappaccioloi 8-5; while at number three the team of Branko Weber andXavier Masson fell to the Green Wave team of Etham Frenkle and Trevor Getz 8-3.
Although they did not win the point, the Trojans won the first doubles match of the day that was completed when the team of Mario Rolemberg and Luis Henrique Grangeiro defeated the Tulane team of Shaye Wali and Joe Young, 8-3 at number one.
After the Green Wave took a 1-0 lead heading into singles play, the Trojans claimed the first four singles matches of the day to take the victory; beginning with a victory by Sahadi at number six when he defeated Getz 6-1, 6-2. The Trojans took a 2-1 lead in the match when Grangeiro defeated Tulane's Wali 6-3, 6-1.
The match was won when Tave defeated Tulane's Coby Kramer Golinkoff 6-4, 6-1; and it was clinched when Rolemberg defeated Rappaccioli of Tulane 6-1, 4-6, 6-1 at number five.
The Trojans return to action next week, traveling to Orlando to face the University of Central Florida on February 5.
