BOCA RATON, Fla. - The 75th-ranked Troy University men's tennis team continued their winning streak on Wednesday afternoon, defeating the University of Buffalo 4-1 on the Florida Atlantic campus.
Troy (10-3) has won five consecutive matches since dropping a decision to Winthrop after cracking the national rankings two weeks ago. After eight years of missing the national rankings, the Trojans have appeared in the Top 75, according to ITATennis.com, two of the last three weeks.
The Trojans had to battle after losing the doubles point, bringing back memories of the last time the Trojans cracked the national rankings - a loss to Winthrop. Troy fell behind after doubles play, as they were only able to capture one of the three doubles matches of the day.
The team of Branko Weber and Xavier Masson were able to win their match at number two over the University of Buffalo team of George Tibil and Marcelo Mazzetto, 8-2. Unfortunately, the Trojans top team of Luis Henrique Grangeiro and Mario Rolemberg fell to Buffalo's Wojciech Starakiewicz and Kirill Kolomyts, 8-4. Buffalo tied the doubles at 1-1, setting the stage for the number one pairing, when they claimed an 8-5 victory at number three when Vusa Hove and Mitch Zenaty defeated Troy's Guilherme Sahadi and Anas Rouchdi.
After falling behind after doubles, the Trojans won the first four singles matches off the court; not evening having to finish matches at number one and number six.
Xavier Masson tied the match at 1-all, when he defeated George Tibil of Buffalo 6-3, 6-3; followed by a victory by Mario Rolemberg over Buffalo's Alex Kalinin 6-3, 6-3 - giving the Trojans a 2-1 lead.
The lead was pushed to 3-1 when Branko Weber claimed a 6-4, 6-3 victory over Buffalo's Kirill Kolomyts; followed by the clinching match victory by Aurelien Tave at number two singles. The sophomore claimed a 7-6, 6-4 victory over Marcelo Mazzetto at number two ending the match.
The Trojans return to action Friday afternoon on the road against Florida Atlantic University, looking to improve on the two victories against Sun Belt Conference teams.
