TROY, Ala. - The Troy University tennis programs put their winning streaks on the line Tuesday afternoon at the Lunsford Tennis Complex against in-state foe Jacksonville State University.
The Troy women (7-7) have won five matches in row, and conclude their four-match homestand on Tuesday afternoon. It will also be the last home match of the season, and the last in the career of senior Stephanie Vieira. The senior has recorded a 7-4 record at number four singles this season, and a 5-5 record at number three doubles (with teammate Rosaura Ramirez-Vega). Over the last weekend, the senior posted a 2-1 record while playing with an injury through all three matches.
Meanwhile, the team has won five consecutive matches dating back to New Orleans, all against conference competition. Over that stretch, freshman Lauren Simpson has recorded a 4-0 record in singles and a 3-1 record in doubles (along with teammate Emma Smith). For the season, Vieira and Ramirez-Vega have posted the best winning percentage in singles play, with Ramirez-Vega posting the most wins at eight.
Both Ramirez-Vega and Simpson have posted the longest current winning streak in singles play, with Ramirez-Vega winning five and Simpson four during the Trojans recent streak. Meanwhile, the doubles team of Karoline Grymel and Leonie Guijt have posted a 10-4 record at number one doubles, including winning their last six matches this season.
The 74th-ranked Troy (12-3) men put their seven-match winning streak on the line against the Gamecocks Saturday afternoon. After a few days off from play, the Trojans return to the courts looking to improve their national ranking - and continue to climb into the top 64 and an automatic bid to the indoor national championships next season.
The men have at least three more matches at home this season, as they host the Sun Belt Shootout, but for senior Guilherme Sahadi this is the last time he will suit up at the Lunsford Tennis Complex in a dual match. Sahadi has posted a 9-4 record in singles - mostly at number six - and has won three matches in a row. He has also teamed with Aurelien Tave (1-1) and Anas Rouchdi (8-5) to post a 9-6 record at number three doubles.
The Trojans top player, Luis Henrique Grangeiro has posted a 10-4 mark this season at the number one position including a 7-2 mark over his last nine matches. He has teamed with Mario Rolemberg to post an 11-4 record at number one doubles. Meanwhile, the number two team of Branko Weber and Xavier Masson has posted a 10-5 record, including an 8-2 record in their last 10 matches. This season, five of the seven players who have been entered into a match in singles play, have posted a winning record.
The Trojans and Jacksonville State will begin play at 2:30 pm Tuesday afternoon, with pre-match ceremonies beginning approximately 20 minutes prior to the match. Admission to all Troy University tennis matches is free.
