GREENSBORO, NC - Senior Lamontrey Stamper made the most of his last chance to advance past the regional round in track and field, finishing eighth overall in the long jump at the NCAA East Region on Thursday night.
With the new qualification standards, the top 48 jumpers advance to the region where the top 16 then advance to the finals of the region. In the regional finals, the top 12 advance to the NCAA National Championships next month in Eugene.
Stamper was able to qualify for the finals on his second jump of the day when he finished with a distance of 7.60 meters (24-11.25). He was able to ride that jump and finish eighth overall to advance to the national meet in June.
The senior started the competition off with a jump of 7.58 meters, fouling on his second attempt, before jumping his new personal best (the fourth best jump in school history) on his third attempt. In the finals, Stamper just needed to hold one of the top 12 positions in order to advance to Eugene, and his jump in the qualification rounds was good enough to do that. In his three jumps in the finals, Stamper went 7.13 meters, foul and 7.58 meters.
Stamper becomes the third jumper to qualify for nationals in three consecutive seasons; following in the footsteps of O'Darien Bassett (2008) and Agata Cichoszewska (2009).
"We are proud of the effort of Lamontrey today," Troy assistant coach Chip Brundage said. "He jumped really well today, and we are looking forward to him representing Troy University in Eugene next month at nationals."
Junior sprinter Antonio McLeod regained his form that he had at the beginning of the season, using it to advance to the second round of qualifying at the East Region Preliminary Meet on Thursday evening.
McLeod crossed the line with the 10th-fastest time in the first round of qualifying, finishing with a personal-best time of 10.34 seconds. The time is tied now for the second-fastest in school history, just 0.03 seconds off of the school record held by Reginald McCray since 1988.
The junior entered the meet with the 37th-fastest time in the East Region, but didn't disappoint at the sound of the gun. He is just one of three runners not from the SEC to finish in the top 10, joining fellow Sun Belt runner Luther Ambrose of ULM and Calesio Newman of the host team - North Carolina A&T. He will enter the second phase of qualifications for the NCAA National Championships tomorrow evening, just 0.04 seconds out of the eighth spot (qualifying spot).
Unfortunately for McLeod, he was the only runner of the four entered into the 100-meters to move to the second round of competition. Freshman Neko Freeman finished 32nd overall with a time of 10.53 seconds, followed by sophomore Payton McGhee at in 36th place with a time of 10.63 seconds and junior Stanley Arukwe in 45th place with a time of 10.83 seconds.
University of Florida sophomore Jeff Demps led the field with a time of 10.11 seconds, followed by Ambrose of ULM at 10.19 seconds.
Meanwhile, the Trojans' freshman javelin sensation Lizzie Clough missed her chance to move on to the finals of the javelin competition early Thursday. The freshman finished 22nd with a distance of 42.01 meters (137-10.00). Although she did not qualify for the finals, the freshman still has preparation to do as she qualified for the US Junior Nationals earlier this season with her school record throw of 46.70 meters (153-02.00).
The meet continues on Friday with Tiphanie Baker in the hammer, Leander McKenzie in the 110-meter hurdles, Latoya Ragland in the 100-meter hurdles, Naquita Rowe in the 100-meter hurdles and Antonio McLeod in the 100-meter dash quarterfinals.
Action begins at 10 am on Friday morning from Irwin Belk Track on the campus of the University of North Carolina A&T.
