ATLANTA - The final tune-up for the East Region came to an end with marks that were bettered on the final day of the Georgia Tech Invitational Saturday evening.
Heading into the meet, Tiphanie Baker and the 4x100-meter relay team felt good about their chances making the region considering their rank entering the last week. However, when they left the track in the capital city of Georgia, they have to feel even better about their marks although most of the marks from this weekend will not be posted until Monday morning.
“We had a great day at the track on Saturday,” Troy assistant coach Chip Brundage said. “It started with a big throw by Tiphanie that got her in the top 10 nationally and it ended with the 4x100-meter relay time running a very good race to better their mark. The 4x100-meter team had a fantastic run, and now will sit and wait until Tuesday for the declarations for the East Region meet.”
Baker ended the last regular season meet with the same gratification in which her whole career has been based on. The senior claimed yet another meet championship, this one in the discus by over 18 feet. Baker, who entered the meet with a season-best throw of 51.79 meters, finished the event with a throw of 54.09 meters (177-05.00). With the distance, and without other marks entered in, Baker currently stands 10th overall in the country and guaranteed her spot in the East Region meet.
Meanwhile, the 4x100-meter relay team ran a sub-40 second race to claim third place in the overall meet and jump to ninth overall in the East Region. The team of Neko Freeman, Antonio McLeod, Payton McGhee and Burke Leonce ran a season-best time of 39.92 seconds. The time is better than their previous season-best mark of 40.16 seconds, and is the second-fastest time in school history - all but securing their berth in the East Region meet. The team finished behind Florida State (39.46) and Miami (39.60) in the final regular season meet of the year.
In the 400-meter hurdles, freshman hurdler Luv Dean entered the event looking to better her chances at making the mark for the US Junior Nationals. Unfortunately for Dean, who entered the meet with a season-best time of 1:03.59, finished the race 26th overall with a time of 1:03.61.
The same could be said for freshman Veronica Bryant in the high jump, the event in which she won the Sun Belt Conference championship. Bryant entered the event with a season-best clearance of 1.72 meters, however, she finished the meet with a clearance of 1.65 meters (5-05.00).
The team will not await the new East Region rankings this week, and must wait to see how many of their student-athletes will be ranked in the top 48 of their respective events and earn a berth in the East Region meet. The NCAA East Region meet will begin May 27 in Greensboro, North Carolina; and will be hosted by North Carolina A&T.
