ATLANTA - The Troy University track and field program completed day one of the Georgia Tech Invitational with several student-athletes in action, looking to better their regional marks.
Senior Tiphanie Baker bettered her chances of moving up the region rankings on the hammer as she finished third overall in the event. She finished with a distance of 58.58 meters (192-06.00), finishing behind two region opponents in Dorotes Habazin of Virginia Tech and Alana Clooten of Georgia Tech. The distance this weekend is 0.32 meters better than her season-best which had her ranked in the top 20 overall in the region.
Freshman Lizzie Clough finished seventh overall in the javelin, finishing with a distance of 41.07 meters (134-09.00). The throw did not better her mark, but Clough should be safe for regionals as she entered the event in the top 15 this season.
In the 100-meter hurdles, both Latoya Ragland and Naquita Rowe were unable to better their standing in the East Region, as they finished 16th and 19th respectively. Ragland ran a time of 13.79, which is 0.06 seconds slower than her season-best which has her sitting 44th in the region. She must now sit and wait on other conference championship meets to conclude to see if she gets into the region in the event.
Antonio McLeod is much like Ragland, but in the 100-meter dash as he ran a time of 10.64 seconds. The time is 0.14 seconds slower than his previous season-best which had him ranked inside the top 50 entering the event.
Meanwhile, freshmen Enock Kirui and Cody Bahrke were unable to meet region standards (inside the top 48) in their respective events on Friday evening. Kirui finished seven seconds off of his season-best in the 3000-meter steeplechase, crossing the line 11th overall in a time of 9:39.40. Unfortunately for Bahrke, he was unable to record a distance in the event.
Sophomore Mackenzie Howell must now sit and wait for a week to see if he qualifies for the region, as he was unable to better his mark of 62.23 meters. He registered a distance of 53.86 meters (176-08.00) in the event on Friday.
The meet concludes on Saturday at Georgia Tech, with results being posted on TroyTrojans.com at the conclusion of the meet.
