DENTON, Texas - A pair of Trojans left the Sun Belt Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships with more than just their individual gold medals.
Senior Tiphanie Baker was named the Women's Outstanding Field Performer as she claimed the conference titles in both the discus and hammer for the second consecutive season. She also scored points in the shot put for the Trojans, enabling them to finish fourth overall in the meet.
Baker started the meet with a championship in the discus with a throw of 51.79 meters (156-07.00). That throw was more than 13 feet farther than her closest competition. She followed that up with a fifth place in the shot put, recording a distance of 13.69 meters (44-11.00); before finishing the meet with a championship in the hammer throw. Baker claimed her second consecutive hammer championship with a throw of 56.07 meters (183-11.00).
Meanwhile, Ja-Courteny Alexander won her second Freshman of the Year title this academic year. Alexander was named the Freshman of the Year during the indoor season, and won the honor again during the outdoor season this past weekend.
Alexander competed in many sprint events for the Trojans, winning medals in some. Alexander finished second in the 400-meter dash, crossing the line in a time of 55.49 seconds. She finished just 0.03 seconds out of a conference championship in the event.
The freshman was part of the conference championship winning team in the 4x400-meter relay. The team of Ariel Cavazos, Veronica Bryant (freshman and conference champion), Alexander and Kapri Hockaday finished with a time of 3:48.51.
One of the few events she didn't medal in, the 200-meters dash, Alexander finished 11th overall with a time of 24.63 seconds. She narrowly missed out on a medal in the 4x100-meter relay, running on a team that finished fourth with a time of 45.92 seconds.
