Trojans Blaze Trail to Mobile
4/9/2010 2:00:00 PM | Track & Field
The meet will be the second of four consecutive meets in the state of Alabama for the Trojans, as they will compete in Auburn for the second time in three weeks next weekend; before hosting the Coach O Invitational at the Jesse H. Colley Track and Soccer Complex.
The meet gets started early Saturday morning with the hammer, which will highlight three freshmen for the Trojans. Freshman Cody Bahrke has the three top throws for the Trojans this season in the event, including a distance of 50.62 meters at the season-opening Southern Miss Invitational. He will be joined in the event by fellow freshman Eddy Lynn, competing in the event for the first time this season; while sophomore Caleb Osborne will look to improve on the fourth-best distance at the school this season of 41.40 meters at the Morehouse Relays.
The men will be joined in the competition by freshman Brynn Forsythe on the women's side. The freshman from Oakland, Fla. is chasing senior Tiphanie Baker for top honors at the school and in the conference this season. Forsythe has thrown a personal best of 48.77 meters in the event, reaching that distance at the Morehouse Relays - leaving her seven meters behind her teammate.
Meanwhile, Grant Bullington returns to action this weekend after taking the week off last week to recover from his decathlon at the FSU Relays. Bullington will compete in the pole vault at the USA Invitational, an event in which he cleared 4.05 meters at the FSU Relays a couple of weeks ago; but has a personal best of 4.47 meters in the event. He is joined in the event by freshman Idral Bowen, who cleared a personal best height of 3.20 meters at the Morehouse Relays.
Another field event to watch on the weekend is the high jump in which Larry Henry will look to improve on his jump of 1.98 meters; meeting the distance twice this season and finishing as the runner-up in the event both times. On the women's side, freshman Veronica Bryant will compete in the high jump looking to better her personal best clearance of 1.63 meters; a mark that is tied at the top of the school's list this season with senior Kapri Hockaday, who will also be competing in the event.
On the track, the Trojans 4x100-meter relay team will take to the track again this week with a different look after last week's time of 40.16 seconds. The team will run the first three legs the same with Neko Freeman leading off, Antonio McLeod running the second leg and Payton McGhee running the third leg. The only difference this week is that Stanley Arukwe will be running the anchor leg instead of Burke Leonce, as the Trojans are searching for an alternate for this year's team.
Chontia Allen returns to competition this week for the Trojans after taking off last week to recover from the heptathlon at the FSU Relays. Allen will run the 100-meter hurdles, and be joined by Latoya Ragland and Naquita Rowe - both of who are looking to better their times in the East Region standings.
The Trojans will focus on the 100-meters and 200-meters sending 17 runners into competition on the men's side between the two events.
Meanwhile, freshman Enock Kirui will test himself on Saturday as he will run in three different events; one middle distance competition and two distance competitions. The freshman will first run in the 1500-meters, followed by the 800-meters, before closing his competition with the 5000-meter run.
The Trojans will conclude the meet with the 4x400-meter relay competition in which they send three teams into competition for the men and one for the women. On the men's side, the Trojans ran a time of 3:13 last season, and will look to better that time this season.
Results will be posted once they become available from the University of South Alabama on Saturday evening. For more information on Troy University athletics, make sure to visit TroyTrojans.com.
