Troy Fall to Cajuns in Game One

TROY, Ala. - The Troy Trojans softball team fell to Louisiana-Lafayette, 6-3, on Saturday to start out a three game series between the two Sun Belt foes.
Ashlyn Williams (17-17) got the start for the Trojans and went the distance giving up five earned runs on 10 hits with six strikeouts.
Kala Moore led the Trojans at the plate with two hits and a run scored.
The Cajuns would get on the board first with two runs in the first inning. Melissa Verde got a one out single up the middle, and after Christ Orgeron hit a dribbler to second base, Gabrielle Bridges hit her 13th home run of the season over the left field trend to put the Trojans in a 2-0 hole.
Louisiana-Lafayette added two more in the fourth. Kelly Cormier started things with an infield single and then was retired on a fielder's choice by Nerissa Myers. Myers stole second and was moved to third on another infield single by Erikka Murphy. Murphy stole second and both runners scored when slap hitter Vallie Gaspard hit a double over Sarah Harris's head in left field.
Gaspard was thrown out trying to advance to third to end anymore stretch.
Troy would get a run across in the fifth to cut the deficit to three at 4-1. Kala Moore got things started with a two out infield single, extending her hitting streak to 12 games. Moore would move to third on a single to the gap by Rocky Paige. The Trojans would then call a double steal in which Paige was retired trying to get to second, but the speedy more would score before Paige was retired putting the Trojans on the board.
Louisiana-Lafayette would get the run back in the sixth. Myers would leadoff with a single and then moved to third on two groundouts. Verde would deliver with an RBI single just over the bag at first base to make the score 5-1.
The Trojans would make things interesting with a couple of scores in the bottom of the sixth. Nikki Hollett would get things started with a leadoff single up the middle. Pinch runner Ashley Adkins would advance to second on a single by Sarah Harris. Courtney Cherry would then deliver with an RBI single to center to score Adkins.
Cajuns center fielder Gaspard tried to throw out Harris who was thinking about advancing to third, the throw went into the Cajuns dugout and scored Harris to get the Trojans within two at 5-3.
The Cajuns would stretch the lead with a single score in the seventh. Bridges led off with a walk but was retired on a fielder's choice by Lana Bowers. Bowers would advance to second on an error and to third on walk. She would score on a passed ball to make the score 6-3.
Donna Bourgeois (17-8) would go the distance for Louisiana-Lafayette, giving up two earned runs on seven hits with nine strikeouts.
Verde, Cormier and Meyers all posted two hits for the Cajuns. Gaspard and Bridges each had two RBI.
The Trojans and Cajuns will close out the series tomorrow with two games at 11:30 a.m. from the Trojan Softball Complex.
