Trojan Women Close Regular Season
4/16/2010 4:00:00 PM | Tennis (W)
Troy (10-7) has not lost since losing back-to-back matches in late February to Auburn and Tulane. Since that point, the Trojans have recorded five of their eight victories against conference competition; running their record to 5-1 against Sun Belt Conference members - with their only loss against nationally-ranked FIU.
The Trojans will face Middle Tennessee on Saturday in Murfreesboro, before facing nationally-ranked North Texas on the same courts on Sunday afternoon. After the match, the Trojans will head home to begin preparations for the Sun Belt Conference Tournament that will start on Thursday with preliminary matches in New Orleans.
Troy is still in the hunt for the third and fourth seeds, meaning they would draw a bye to Friday night. If they fall below the fourth seed, they will be forced to play two matches on Friday to earn a bid to the tournament semifinals on Saturday.
Rosaura Ramirez-Vega is the lone Trojan in double figures in victories this season, playing with a record of 10-6 at the number five position. The freshman has gotten that record by recording an 8-2 record in her last 10 matches, falling in her last match on the road to Alexis Brown of Florida A&M. Although she is the only in double figures, a trio of Trojans have current winning streaks of four or more matches at their position. Junior Leonie Guijt currently holds a four-match winning streak at number three, while Stephanie Vieira (number four) and Emma Smith (number six) have five-match winning streaks.
In doubles play, the Trojans are led by their number one and number two teams this season who have combined for a 23-11 record. The number one team of Guijt and Karoline Grymel has recorded the best record at 12-5, but the number two team of Lauren Simpson and Smith are the hottest doubles team for the Trojans. They come into the weekend with a record of 11-6, but have won six in a row and posted a 7-3 record in their last 10 matches. The duo has not lost since being moved to number one against Kennesaw early in March.
The match against Middle Tennessee begins at 12 noon on Saturday, followed by an 11 am start against North Texas on Sunday. Results will be posted immediately following the match or when they become available.
