NEW ORLEANS, La. - Troy University freshman sprinter Neko Freeman was named the Male Track Athlete of the Week by the Sun Belt Conference office Tuesday afternoon, as voted on by the media relations contact from each institution.
Freeman ran a personal best 10.48 seconds in the 100-meters this weekend at the South Alabama Invitational, capturing first place in the competition - the first individual championship for the freshman. The time ties the best mark at the school this season, and is currently the 21st-fastest time in the country, along with teammate Antonio McLeod.
The freshman then took part in the 4x100-meter relay for the Trojans, helping the team finish second overall with a time of 40.68 seconds after running the second leg. But he wasn't done on the day, earning his third top two finish of the afternoon as part of the 4x400-meter relay team. Freeman ran the second leg on the team that ran a time of 3:18.72 - just 0.72 seconds off their season best - to finish second overall in the competition.
Freeman becomes the fifth different Troy track and field athlete to be named with such an honor, but the first in two weeks. He joins Ja-Courteny Alexander (female track), Tiphanie Baker (female field), Cody Bahrke (male field) and McLeod (male track) to be honored by the conference.
The Trojans travel to Auburn for the second time in three weeks, participating in the War Eagle Invitational this weekend on the campus of Auburn University.
