MOBILE, Ala. - The Troy University women's tennis team continues to push towards the top 75 nationally, winning their seventh consecutive match by defeating in-state rival South Alabama 5-2 Sunday afternoon.
Troy (9-7) needed just one victory in doubles play to capture the point after South Alabama (1-10) forfeited at number three. However, the doubles point would come down to number two after South Alabama captured number one doubles with an 8-5 victory by Chane Hines and Marie Boura. The Trojans captured the doubles point, however, when the number two team of Emma Smith and Lauren Simpson continued their winning ways with an 8-6 victory over South Alabama's Jess Courtnell and Katie Welch.
In singles play, the Trojans jumped to a 2-0 overall lead when South Alabama forfeited at number six - giving Emma Smith the victory. The lead was extended to 3-0 when freshman Rosaura Ramirez-Vega defeated South Alabama's Jessica Houston 6-0, 6-0.
South Alabama pulled within a single match overall when they used victories by Katie Welch and Marie Boura at number one and two, pulling to within 3-2.
Troy wrapped up the match when senior Stephanie Vieira defeated Jess Courtnell 6-3, 6-4 and won another match when Leonie Guijt won in three sets over South Alabama's Chane Hines 3-6, 6-3, 1-0 (10-7).
The Trojans return to action April 10 on the road against Florida A&M University in Tallahassee.
