TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - After a day filled with the sunshine, the Troy University track and field program dealt with cloudy, windy and rainy conditions on the opening day of the FSU Relays held at the Mike Long Track; on the campus of Florida State University.
Senior Tiphanie Baker was in the middle of the hammer competition, along with Brynn Forsythe and Lauren Howell when the lightning hit the Tallahassee area. The lightning brought things to a halt on Thursday and forced a long delay at the facility.
Reigning Sun Belt Conference Male Athlete of the Meet, Cody Bahrke, continued his hot streak as he finished second in the hammer on the first day of competition. The freshman registered his second-longest throw of the season with a distance of 49.41 meters, finishing just behind Florida State's Travis Whitfield with a throw of 59.02 meters.
After day one in the decathlon, the Trojans' Grant Bullington stands third overall with 3484 points. He trails only North Dakota State's Weston Leutz (3813 points) and Ted Rud (3747 points) in the standings.
The junior was able to finish in the top three most of the day in the events, and just missed a new personal best in the high jump. Bullington cleared 1.97 meters in the high jump, just 0.01 meters off of his personal best to finish tied for second in the event.
His best finish of the day came in the day's first event, the 100-meters as he finished second only to Leutz with a time of 11.39 seconds. He followed that up with a second place finish in the long jump, hitting a distance of 6.62 meters; and a third place finish in the shot put with a distance of 10.08 meters.
After the high jump, Bullington finished off the day with a time of 52.17 seconds in the 400 meters for a fourth place finish in the day's last event. Although he missed his PR in the high jump, he was able to set a new personal best in the 400-meters to close out the day's events.
The decathlon continues tomorrow with the 110-meter hurdles, discus, pole vault, javelin and 1500-meters.
In the heptathlon, Chontia Allen finished the first day in the top 10 with a ninth place finish. She totaled 2393 points on the first day of competition and hit a pair of personal bests in the day.
Allen started the day off with a personal best in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 15.64 seconds, following that up with a jump of 1.43 meters in the high jump. In the final two events of the day, Allen set a new personal best in each event beginning with the shot put. She managed to throw the shot a distance of 8.31 meters, and followed that performance up with a time of 27.50 seconds in the 200-meter dash.
The junior still has the long jump, javelin and 800-meter run to finish up on Friday; and better her standing in the heptathlon.
The meet continues tomorrow with a host of events at both the high school and collegiate levels. The events start at 10 am with the decathlon and heptathlon, followed by the running and field events at 12 noon.
