TROY, Ala. - Battling fatique and heavy rains that forced their match to move back a few hours, the Troy University women's tennis team was able to dry the courts and walked away with a 6-1 victory over UALR Sunday afternoon.
Troy (7-7) played their third match in less than 36 hours, and the heavy rains forced the match to move from 10 am until 4 pm on Sunday, giving the Trojans six more hours to rest their legs for their third consecutive home match.
"We're thrilled to come through this weekend with three quality wins against conference opponents," Troy assistant coach Tyler Faulkner siad. "Today was tough because the weather didn't really cooperate, but we came out and played very well once we finally took the court."
The Trojans jumped ahead early to earn their fourth consecutive victory and even their record at .500, when they captured the doubles point behind the play of three freshmen and a junior. The number two team of Lauren Simpson and Emma Smith was able to claim an 8-4 victory over UALR's Nathalia Garay and Fanny Lopez-Augusto to set the stage for the other two teams to earn the point for the Trojans.
It didn't take long for the Trojans to earn the point as the number one team of Karoline Grymel and junior Leonie Guijt defeated UALR's Anne Weijenborg and Yana Kakovkina 8-4. Following the decisive point, UALR was able to win a match at number three when the team of Veronique Luksich/Rebecca Van den Houte defeated Troy's Stephanie Vieira and Rosaura Ramirez-Vega 9-8 (8-6 in the tiebreaker).
In singles play, Troy was able to close the victory quickly as they won five out of the six singles matches - the only loss was the last match of the day at number one. Emma Smith was the first off Sunday, defeating Rebecca Van den Houte 6-2, 6-2; followed by Leonie Guijt defeating UALR's Yana Kakovkina 6-2, 6-3. The clinching victory was by Rosaura Ramirez-Vega for the second this weekend when she defeated UALR's Nathalia Garay 6-2, 6-3.
Other winners on the day for the Trojans were freshman Lauren Simpson at number two, as she ran her record to 3-0 on the weekend with a 6-4, 6-3 victory over Anne Weijenborg; and senior Stephanie Vieira at number four with a 3-6, 6-3, 1-0 (11-9) victory over Fanny Lopez-Augusto.
"We got some great individual performances this weekend from both our veterans and our freshmen players," Faulkner said. "These conference matches were a great step forward as the season progresses."
