TROY, Ala. - The Troy University track and field program will look to build on the 32 medals they won this past weekend in Hattiesburg, traveling to Atlanta for the Morehouse Relays Invitational this weekend.
The Trojans combined to win 11 gold medals, 11 silver medals and 10 bronze medals in the opening weekend; including a pair of individual gold medals claimed by seniors Tiphanie Baker (Birmingham, Ala.) and Lamontrey Stamper (Blakely, Ga.). Baker claimed a pair of medals in the discus (48.17 meters) and in the hammer (55.98 meters); while Stamper claimed medals in the long jump (7.20 meters) and triple jump (14.59 meters) in the first outdoor meet of the season.
Stamper will compete in both of those competitions this weekend, while Baker will be given the day off from competition after going through the grueling indoor schedule this season for the Trojans.
Freshman Brynn Forsythe (Oakland, Fla.) will look for her second medal of the outdoor season as she competes in the hammer and the shot put. The freshman claimed a silver medal in the shot put, and finished just out of medal contention in the Southern Miss Invitational with a fourth place finish in the hammer.
Freshmen Ja-Courteny Alexander (Cairo, Ga.) and Veronica Bryant (Columbus, Ga.) will be looking for their second individual medal this weekend. Alexander won the gold in the 100-meter dash at the Southern Miss Invitational and is entered in the 100-meters and 200-meters this weekend; while Bryant won the gold in the 400-meter intermediate hurdles at the Southern Miss Invitational and is entered in that same event, as well as the high jump.
On the men's side, two-time medal winner Neko Freeman (Lawrenceville, Ga.) will compete in his home state in the 100-meters, as well as a leg in the 4x200-meter relay and 4x100-meter relay. The freshman claimed a bronze in the 100 and a silver in the 200 last weekend, but will not run the 200-meters this weekend.
Sophomore Payton McGhee (Luverne, Ala.), a bronze medal winner last weekend in the 200-meters, will run in just relay competition - the 4x100-meter relay and the 4x200-meter relay. Senior Burke Leonce (Castries, St. Lucia) will do the same thing this weekend after capturing a bronze in the 400-meters at the Southern Miss Invitational.
Sophomore Andre McElroy (Pensacola, Fla.) will look to improve on his silver medal finish in the 400-meters last weekend, as he is entered in the same race this weekend.
Larry Henry (Hinesville, Ga.), Eddy Lynn (Milton, Fla.) and Cody Bahrke (Neola, Ia.) all return to action this week, each medaling last weekend in the high jump, discus and hammer respectively.
Several athletes will be making their debuts this weekend, led by senior Kapri Hockaday (Modesto, Calif.). The senior will be making her debut in the high jump this weekend and the 400-meters, as she prepares for the heptathlon later this season.
Heath Fincher (Birmingham, Ala.) will be making his debut this season in the meet-opening javelin. The freshman from Mountain Brook High School missed the season-opening outdoor meet while he recovered from an illness. Senior Drew Horner (Orlando, Fla.) will be making his debut after recovering from injuries suffered in the cross country season, and will run in the 800-meters for the Trojans.
Several other student-athletes will be making their debuts this weekend. For a complete listing of student-athletes competing this weekend, check the results posted at the conclusion of the meet.
Several other student-athletes will be taking the weekend off in Atlanta, along with Baker. Other medalists from the opening meet who will not make the trip to Morehouse include Lizzie Clough (Mobile, Ala.) in the javelin, who claimed the gold at Southern Miss. Sylvia Chirchir (Eldoret, Kenya), a silver medalist in the 5000-meters will not make the trip, nor will bronze medal winner Morgan Paulson (Mobile, Ala.).
Senior Jeff Rhodes (Florence, Ala.) and freshman Enock Kirui (Eldoret, Kenya) will take the weekend off in distance competition after capturing gold medals last weekend.
The meet gets underway at 9 am with the javelin (men) and hammer (women) in field events, while several running events will take place headlined by the opening 10,000 meter combined race.
Results will be posted on TroyTrojans.com once they become available.
