BOWLING GREEN, Ky. - Junior Donette McNair recorded her eighth double-double of the season, but it wasn't enough as the Troy Trojans fell to Western Kentucky University 67-51 at E.A. Diddle Arena in Sun Belt Conference action Saturday night.
McNair finished with 20 points and 15 rebounds, her fifth game of 15 or more rebounds this season for Troy (11-11, 4-9 Sun Belt). She shot 7-of-17 of the floor and 6-of-11 from the charity stripe, while grabbing six offensive rebounds. Sophomore Sarah McAppion came off the bench after starting the last five games, recording 12 points on 5-of-11 shooting from the floor.
The Trojans shot 33.3 (19-of-57) percent from the floor, and just 12.5 (2-of-16) percent from beyond the arc in the loss. They also shot 52.4 (11-of-21) percent from the free throw line, while forcing 16 WKU turnovers in the loss.
Meanwhile, WKU (15-8, 9-3 Sun Belt) was led by senior Dominique Duck with 17 points on 4-of-8 shooting from the floor and 9-of-10 shooting from the charity stripe. Kenzie Rich added 11 and LaTeira Owens 10 off the bench for the Lady Toppers.
The Lady Toppers shot 44.2 (23-of-52) percent from the floor and just 25 (2-of-8) percent from beyond the arc. They also shot 79.2 (19-of-24) percent from the free throw line, while outrebounding Troy 41-35 for the contest.
After falling behind by as many as 23 with 9:28 to play in the second half, the Trojans mounted a comeback and had a chance to trim the lead to single digits late in the contest.
After a Duck lay-up gave the Lady Toppers a 56-33 lead with 8:26 to play in the contest, Troy went on a 13-4 run over the next five minutes to pull within 14 points.
Senior guard Brittnie Davis started the run as she knocked down a 3-pointer, the first of the game for the Trojans, with 8:21 remaining to trim the lead to 56-36. She was fouled on the play by WKU's Hope Brown, but missed the ensuing free throw.
WKU came down on the next trip and used a lay-up by Rich to extend the lead back to 22 at 58-36, before Alyce Shearing trimmed it to 58-38 on a short jumper with 7:16 to play. The lead grew back to 22 when Amy McNear hit a pair of free throws for WKU, but was trimmed back to 20 when McNair hit a lay-up with 6:37 to play in the contest.
McNair was able to score on the Trojans' next possession, trimming the lead to 60-42 with 6:11 to play in the game, and that is when Troy had a chance to trim the lead even further. The Trojans missed a pair of 3-pointers and lay-up, while holding WKU scoreless for almost three minutes in the contest.
The game stayed that way until the junior hit a pair of free throws with 3:53 remaining to trim the deficit to 60-44. That was followed by a pair of free throws by McAppion with 3:31 to play, before a 3-pointer by Shearing trimmed it to a 13-point deficit with 2:32 to play in the game at 62-49.
From there WKU scored five of the next seven points for the final margin.
