Trojans Split on Day One in Magic City

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The Troy Trojans softball team split two games at the Magic City Classic on Friday. Troy defeated Alabama State 6-4 on the strength of seven extra base hits, but fell to UAB 4-1, despite outhitting the Blazers, 7-5.
GAME ONE
Troy (7-3) defeated Alabama State by a score of 6-4 to open their portion of the Magic City Classic in Birmingham, Ala. The Trojans used 14 hits, seven of them extra base hits to plate their six runs.
Haley Hutchins started the game in the circle for Troy and went the distance, allowing just four runs on seven hits and fanning six Hornets
Hayden Gann led the Trojans at the plate, going 3-for-4 with a home run, two doubles and 4 RBI. Kaitlin Kenney also posted three hits, including a double.
Troy got some early run support for starter Haley Hutchins. Kala Moore led off the bottom of the first inning with a double to right field. Courtney Cherry followed with a double down the left field line to plate the first Trojan run. Hayden Gann followed with a blast over the center field fence, plating two more runs. The home run was Gann's second of the young season.
The Trojans would add three more in the second. Kaitlin Kenney led off the inning with a double, and after stealing third base, was driven in by an RBI single off of the bat of Sarah Shields. After an infield single by Moore, Gann drove in her third and fourth runs with a one out double.
The Hornets (2-7) would get two runs back in the third inning. They loaded the bases on an error, a single and a walk. A two out RBI single plated both runs, making the score 6-2.
Alabama State would plate two more runs in the seventh before Troy closed out the game, 6-4.
GAME TWO
Despite outhitting the Blazers 7-5, Troy (7-4) fell to UAB 4-1 to close out their day. Ashlyn Williams started in the circle for the Trojans and was tagged with the loss. Rocky Paige led the Trojans offensively, going 2-for-3. Hayden Gann added another RBI to go with her four from game one.
The Blazers (6-4) got on the board first with a single run in the top of the first inning. UAB scored due to two Trojan errors and an RBI single.
UAB plated three more runs in the third on the strength of a single and two doubles to pull ahead, 4-0.
After both teams were quite for a few innings, the Trojans got a run on the board in the bottom of the sixth inning. Kala Moore led off with an infield single. After Courtney Cherry struck out looking, Hayden Gann delivered with a single to the gap in right center, plating Moore from first.
After Rocky Paige beat out a grounder for another infield hit in the inning, Sarah Harris flew out to center and Belinda White singled up the middle, loading the bases with two outs. However, the Trojans couldn't deliver and entered the seventh inning trailing 4-1.
The score remained that way throughout the seventh and the Trojans fell to UAB, 4-1.
The Trojans will be back in action tomorrow when they take on Nicholls State at 11:00 a.m. from Bulldog Field on the campus of Samford University.
