BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Troy took their only game of the day at the Magic City Classic over Nicholls State, 3-2, on the strength of a three run sixth inning.
Ashlyn Williams went the distance, striking out 14 to pick up her sixth win of the season, leaving her one win shy of tying the career record for wins at Troy. She gave up just two runs on four hits.
Williams cruised through the first three innings, striking out eight Colonels and giving up just one hit.
Troy (8-3) mounted its first real threat in the third inning when Nikki Hollett hit a lead off triple, however the Trojans were unable to capitalize on the early base runner and the game remained scoreless.
Nicholls State (6-2) was the first to get on the board with a two spot in the sixth. After a single up the middle, Williams made her only mistake of the game and the Colonels hit a home run to right center to go ahead 2-0.
The Trojans got both runs back plus the go ahead run in the bottom of the inning. Kala Moore led off with a four pitch walk, then Kaitlin Kenney beat out a bunt attempt to place two with no outs. After Hayden Gann struck out, Rocky Paige drew a walk to load the bases. Kala Moore scored on a wild pitch to plate Troy's first run. A RBI single by Belinda White tied things up at 2-2.
A heads up play by Courtney Cherry allowed her to score on a passed ball to give the Trojans the lead, 3-2.
In the Nicholls seventh, Williams struck out her 14th batter to close out the Colonels, 3-2.
The Trojans will be back in action on Sunday when they close out the Magic City Classic against the host Samford Bulldogs at 1:15 p.m.
