TROY, Ala. - The Troy University women's basketball team is urging all fans to wear pink Wednesday night to Trojan Arena, as they take on East Division leading Middle Tennessee State University on "WBCA Pink Zone Initiative Night."
Troy (11-13, 4-10 Sun Belt) is looking to snap a five-game losing streak when Middle Tennessee (18-5, 13-1 Sun Belt) invades Trojan Arena for the 7 p.m. tip-off in conference action. During the streak the Trojans' Donette McNair has averaged a double-double over the last three weeks and is currently one of just players listed in the top 12 in rebounding and scoring. She currently averages 13.5 points and 9.8 rebounds per game this season.
The junior is also climbing the list of rebounding all-time at the Division I level, needed just three rebounds to pass Valensia Hairston for seventh all-time at the school. McNair is also closing in on the single-season rebounding record at the Division I level in school history.
Senior Brittnie Davis is the only other player in double figures for the Trojans, averaging 12.4 points per game, and she continues to lead the team in steals this season. The senior from Montgomery, scored 20 or more points in three straight games earlier this season, and has done so in four games this season. Meanwhile, freshman Sophie Kleeman is among the conference leaders in assists, as she leads the team as a true freshman by averaging 2.7 assists per game.
Davis recently played in her 100th game as a Trojan, and will be joined by senior Alyce Shearing Saturday night as she will play in her 100th game of her career.
Middle Tennessee is led by All-American Alysha Clark, who is averaging 25.1 points and 10.8 rebounds per game this season. In the first meeting, an 84-51 Blue Raider win, Clark was held to just 15 points. Senior Brandi Brown is averaging 14.4 points per game, while fellow senior Jackie Pickel is averaging 14 points per game for a team receiving votes in both major college basketball polls.
The Department of Athletics is urging everyone to wear pink in support of Breast Cancer Awareness, as "Chad" from Alltel will present a check prior to tip-off to the Kay Yow/WBCA Cancer Fund. The Troy Relay for Life will also be at the door throughout the night to collect donations to make another donation through the university to the fund.
The game is sponsored by Touchstone in conjunction with Alltel, and there will be t-shirts and pink rally towels given away throughout the night. Come out and be a part of something special at Trojan Arena, with the doors opening 90 minutes before tip-off.
The game can be heard on WTBF-94.7 FM, with the pregame show beginning at 6:45 pm; followed by the tip at 7 pm with Buddy Johnson and Ben Stanfield providing all the action.
