The Trojans head into the winter break after a successful fall session
TROY, Ala. - The Troy University track and field program closed out their fall training this past Thursday afternoon with the Cardinal, White and Gray Intersquad Competition. This was the second annual intersquad for the Trojan Tack and Field team.
“The student-athletes have worked hard all fall in the classroom and in workouts,” Troy Director of Track and Field/Cross Country Jill Lancaster said. “The competition gives them a chance to see where they are training wise and have some fun at the end of fall workouts.”
The coaching staff likes the intersquad scrimmage as it helps them to see the competitive nature of their team, while putting the newcomers in against the veterans of the team.
The spinters and jumpers on the women's side are led this season by returning conference champions, Ja-Courtney Alexander, Veronica Bryant and Ariel Cavazos. The newcomers who made an immediate impact were freshman Adria Hill (Scottsboro Ala.) and Amiracle Watson (Mobile Ala.).
Other newcomers that performed well for the women in the intersquad competition at sprints and jumps were Kierra Lyles, Tiffany Slater, Catherine Reeves, Megan Schnuelle, Hannah Wright and Jessica Upshaw.
The men's sprint and jump crew looked to NCAA East Regional veterans and Sun Belt Conference champions as well in Payton McGhee, Tony McLeod, Stanley Arukwe and Neko Freeman. The men's side will also be helped by a group of young returners, such as Phillip Pritchett and Randall Askew, in the upcoming season.
Two newcomers from Mobile (Ala.), Brandon Norwood and Thaddeus Curtis, did well in the hurdles, along with redshirt freshman Jace Wilemon. Returners, Trent Beavers and Taylor McMann, did well in the jumps for the men as well.
The distance runners on the team are still in transition training from their Cross Country season but competed along with the rest of the team this week, and did well.
The distance runners are led by seniors Agnes Kapsoiyo and Syvia Chirchir on the women's side and Enock Kirui on the men's side. Newcomers, David Hudman and Cory Jones, on the men's side continued to push the upper classmen as they did throughout the season and did well in the meet.
“Newcomers such as Kendall Harris and Landry Key mixed it up very well and learned some valuable lessons on how competitive our team actually is,” coach Stephane Hetherington said. “Catelyn Dake, after only one cross country season with us really took the reins in her middle distance events and we have high hopes for her for the indoor season.”
The throwing athletes look to have a good season with the success of the intersquad competition, as well.
“Being a young squad, I see our athletes developing very well at this point in training,” assistant coach Chip Brundage said. “Cody Bahrke and Eddie Lynn will have a good year in three events and, senior, Caleb Osborne will test the waters this year in discus and hammer.”
Brynn Forsythe led the women in hammer at the meet, coming off an injury, and Ashley Evans led in the discus. Freshman, Karen Wyatt, had a great day in all of the throwing events and looks to be a great addition to the team. Sophomore, Nicole Studstill, had a great preseason and Coach Brundage feels she should have an exciting year.
The javelin throwers are being led this season by NCAA and Junior USATF National qualifiers Matt Braswell and MacKenzie Howell, and newcomer to the team, Junior College National Champion, Martin Pildavs. Pildavs was actually able to win the teams football throwing contest after never throwing a football before the competition.
