Trojans Drop to 2-10 on the Season
LOGAN, Utah – Troy struggled from the field all night shooting just 31 percent from the field despite attempting season high totals from beyond the arc and the field to fall to Idaho State 77-73 on Wednesday night in World Vision Basketball Classic action.
The Trojans (2-10) attempted a season-high 50 3-pointers and 86 field goals, but shot just 31.4 percent from deep and 22 percent from the field.
The two players that made all the shots tonight one of them was 0-for-9 and the other one was 4-for-13 that's 4-for-22. We could use maybe just two of those.
“Idaho State, you know, I thought they did a good job tonight,” Troy head coach Don Maestri said. “I thought we missed Vernon Taylor's presence, including the energy level he gives us on defense. That was something that was a challenge. I give Idaho State credit. I thought they did a really good job on the defensive end and the offensive end.
“That sad thing is that it was two of our, supposedly, better shooters in Regis (Huddleston) and Travis (Lee). They were just terrible from the 3-point line. They couldn't hit a shot. I don't know what the reason was, but if they hit any shots at all, we win the game. I'm not putting the blame on them, I don't think any one person loses a game, but they could have won it for us.”
The Trojans did out-rebound Idaho State 48-45 and committed just six turnovers to 13 by the Bengals (4-7).
Troy made it an early 11-2 lead on back-to-back lay-ups by Bernard Toombs, but the Bengals countered with a 14-0 run to take a 16-11 lead. Patsatsia's free throw with 11:40 on the clock broke the streak.
Flynn Clayman's two at the foul line was Troy's first basket in more than seven minutes of game time. Shawntez Patterson knotted the game at 17 with a three-point play with 8:46 on the clock.
The Trojans broke an 0-for-13 streak from outside with Regis Huddleston's trey with 17:30 left and another triple, this time by Will Weathers gave Troy a 23-19 lead. Huddleston scored 12 for the game.
Levan Patsatsia's off-balance leaner in the paint cut Troy's deficit to four point, 37-33, where it would stay into halftime.
One night after hitting 17 3-pointers in the overtime win over Western Michigan, Troy struggled in the first half against the Bengals, sinking just 5-of-23 (21.7 percent).
Idaho State started the second half with a 5-0 run before the Trojans could answer with two from Toombs down low. A 3-pointer by Andre Hatchett made it a 10-point deficit for the Trojans, 51-41 with less than 13 minutes remaining.
But the Trojans quickly responded with a three-point play from Toombs, his second of the night and a trey by Huddleston. A 3-pointer by Clayman cut Idaho State's lead to just 58-54 with 9:10 left in the second half.
Huddleston's fourth 3-pointer cut the deficit to just three points. But Troy couldn't convert a big steal by Patsatsia and Kenny McGowen scored on consecutive trips for the Bengals to widen Troy's deficit out to seven points.
David Busma's lay-up with 1:13 left made it a seven-point game and after a free throw by Lee, Abnrer Moreira split a pair at the line. Patsatsia knocked down a trey and in a bizarre play, Toombs was fouled giving the Trojans back the ball.
Patsatsia finished the night with 12 points and eight rebounds.
Lee missed two tries from outside, then following a Troy foul Mike Lacey was successful on two free throws to put the Trojans back down six with 24.6 left.
Huddleston missed an errant attempt and Hatchett hit one of two at the line, but despite another 3-pointer by Patterson, Troy would run out of time with the final tally standing 77-73.
Patterson finished with 17 points to lead Troy. Weathers added his second consecutive double-double with 13 assists and 10 rebounds. He also scored five points.
