WASHINGTON, DC – The Troy University women's basketball will enjoy a couple of days off to get their legs back under them before they face American University on Wednesday night. The Trojans are coming off of back-to-back games in Jacksonville and will be on their second leg of their six-day road trip beginning this week.
Troy (2-9) has lost three games in a row, but showed improvement on Sunday in a 62-55 loss to UMKC. Junior DeAngela Sword (Montgomery, Ala./Pensacola JC) led the Trojans with 17 points, as she was named All-Tournament, while senior Donette McNair (New London, Conn./New London HS) and sophomore Sophie Kleeman (Newcastle, Australia/Newcastle HS) each added 10 in the loss.
The Trojans were able to keep their turnovers down and got good shot selection, but it wasn't enough as they were unable to control 24 of the UMKC points from the free throw line.
“We scored four more baskets, took 12 more shots, forced them into seven more turnovers,” Troy head coach Michael Murphy said. “We just couldn't defend the free throw line. They shot 31 free throws and we shot 13, it is just hard to defend the free throw line.
“We did a much better job this afternoon in the second half than we did yesterday. We are still struggling getting production off the bench which is hurting us, but for the most part I was pretty pleased with how hard we played. We had better balanced scoring, and I thought we executed some things in the half court far better than we did yesterday.”
Troy will face their fourth opponent that qualified for the postseason on Wednesday night in American University (6-4), as the Eagles qualified for the WNIT last season after finishing tied for first in the regular season in the Patriot League. The Eagles made the tournament championship game with a berth to the NCAA Tournament on the line, but just fell short. They are coming off a 64-60 victory over George Washington this past week.
Meanwhile, the Trojans are led by McNair and Sword, with McNair averaging 13.6 points and 9.6 rebounds per game and Sword at 13.4 points per game.
The game will broadcast by American University on Wednesday night, with no radio (as of Sunday afternoon) scheduled to take place for the game.
