Trojans Add Two JUCO Guards
Troy has five seniors scheduled to graduate in May and with that in mind, the Trojans added two junior college players last week during the November signing period.
Junior college transfers Emil Jones (Hattiesburg, Miss.) and Deonata "DJ" Jethroe (Columbus, Miss.) both signed Letters of Intent for the 2011-12 scholastic year.
“We are happy for [Jones] to be joining our program and we fully expect him to be a major contributor immediately,” head coach Don Maestri said. “We are also happy to add [Jethroe] to our program. The great thing about DJ is that he has three years of eligibility. We also are expecting great things out of him.”
Jones will come to Troy from Pearl River Community College in Poplarville, Miss. where he starred on both the court and gridiron for two seasons.
Through six games of his sophomore campaign, Jones is doing it all for Pearl River CC. He is averaging 16.2 ppg, 8.0 rpg and has totaled 16 assists and 13 steals. He is also shooting 48.6 percent (34-for-70) from the field.
Jones was responsible for more than 5,000 total yards and 47 touchdowns during his two seasons as the starting quarterback for the Wildcats.
Jethroe is a freshman this season at Alabama Southern Community College in Monroeville. The Columbus, Miss. native missed his senior basketball season after suffering an ACL tear and moved from Alabama back home to Columbus after the injury.
Jethroe has appeared in six of Alabama Southern's first seven contests while dealing with an injury. He averaged 17.3 ppg during his junior season (2008-09) at Hazel Green (Ala.) High School.
The spring signing period begins April 13, 2011 and runs until May 18.
Troy Assistant Head Coach David Felix on Jones…
“Emil is very athletic. He was a three sport guy in high school and was recruited in football, basketball and baseball. He played JUCO football for two years and this is his second year of JUCO basketball. He's a very versatile guy. Not only can he score, but he's going to rebound from a guard position.”
Troy Assistant Coach Michael Curry on Jethroe…
“DJ is 6-foot-4 wing that really shoots it. He's got good size and a good feel for the game. He's a good scorer that should be able to help us immediately. The other benefit is he will have three years left to play.”
