Troy Falls To Middle Tennessee In Tough Three-Set Match

The Trojans hit the road for final regular season matches next weekend in Florida

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. - The Troy University Trojans volleyball team battled for three sets against Sun Belt East Division leader Middle Tennessee State University, before falling 3-0 (25-21, 25-20, 25-23) in conference action on Saturday night.
"I'm proud of the team," head coach Sonny Kirkpatrick said. "They attacked very well tonight. We had great team chemistry on the floor. We played really well and I'm very proud of the eight girls we had dressing tonight."
Troy (10-21, 2-12 Sun Belt) was led on the night by junior Natasha Kolunija with 12 kills and a .323 attack percentage. Meanwhile, senior Megan Henderson recorded 24 assists and a .444 attack percentage for the Trojans on the night.
In the first set, Middle Tennessee (24-5, 14-1 Sun Belt) took an early lead over the Trojans, but Troy was swift to come back and tie the set. The Trojans eventually took an 8-5 lead with kills from sophomore Devin Von Pingel and Henderson, as well as a service ace from freshman Alexandra Alexander.
Middle Tennessee rallied, but kills from Kolunija, junior Laura Mackley and sophomore Kayla Giles put a stop to this rally and extended the Troy lead to 18-13. The Blue Raiders were able to rally again, this time tying the set with the Trojans at 20-all. From there, Middle Tennessee scored five of the next six points for the opening set victory.
Middle Tennessee was able to nab the early lead from the Trojans once again in the second set, but kills from Kolunija, Giles and Henderson were able to tie the set at 8-all. From that point, Troy was able to stay within a point of Middle Tennessee, getting to within 14-13 before the Blue Raiders were able to pull away. Kills from Kolunija and Giles kept the Trojans in the mix, but Middle Tennessee was able to pull away for the victory.
The Trojans took the early lead in the third set with kills from Henderson, Kolunija and senior Victoria Rogoschewsky. Middle Tennessee rallied to tie the Trojans at 4-all, and the set would eventually be tied five times before the Blue Raiders pulled ahead with the lead at 13-12.
Middle Tennessee was never able to get more than two ahead of Troy and at 18-17, the Trojans were able to form a rally with kills from Von Pingel and Henderson to tie the set at 20-all. The two teams battled for the next few points, until the Blue Raiders got match point and put the victory away.
Troy's next match will be next Friday when they compete against FIU in Miami at 3:30 pm in their final regular season road series.
