TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - The first day of the Crimson Tide Fall Invitational proved rough for the Troy University men's tennis team, as only one player advanced in the championship bracket in their respective draw.
Sami Ghorbel was the lone bright spot for the Trojans on Friday as he won his only match of the day after receiving a bye in the Round of 16. Ghorbel squared off with Tennessee's Bryan Swartz and came away with a 6-4, 6-4 victory in the quarterfinals. He now advances to the semifinals of the Hannah Draw to face Indiana's Stpehen Vogel.
Junior Branko Weber dropped his first match of the tournament in the Stabler Draw, as he fell 7-5, 6-1 to Alabama's Vikram Reddy. The junior drops into the consolation first round where he will face Tulane's Shayne Wali on Saturday morning.
In the Palmer Draw, freshman Tommy Cundy dropped his first match of the tournament as he fell 6-1, 6-4 to Tennessee Tech's John Taylor. The freshman falls into the consolation first round where he will face Kyle Wishing of Middle Tennessee on Saturday morning.
Senior Mario Rolemberg also fell victim in the Round of 16, this time in the Namath Draw, as he fell 6-2, 6-1 to Johnathan Raude of Boston College. The senior fell into the consolation bracket and due to injuries has received a bye to the consolation semifinal round.
Meanwhile, Jamie Eccleton faced off against a Sun Belt foe in the Round of 16 in the Musso Draw; falling to Shaun Waters of Middle Tennessee in a heart-breaking three-set match. Eccleton dropped the first set 6-2, before storming back to win the second set 6-0; however, the third set went the way of Waters as he squeezed out a victory in the third set 7-6. Eccleton falls into the consolation bracket, where he will face Sean Tan of Notre Dame on Saturday morning.
In the Bryant Draw, Anas Rouchdi fell in his first match of the tournament; the first that has happened this season. Rouchdi dropped a 6-2, 6-4 decision to Notre Dame's Greg Andrews; dropping into the consolation bracket where he will face UAB's Danny Manlow in the first round on Saturday.
The tournament continues through the weekend on the campus of the University of Alabama, with results being posted when they become available.
