TROY, Ala. – After wrapping up the best regular season record and Sun Belt Conference finish in school history, the Troy University soccer team travels to Bowling Green, Ky. for the opening round of the Sun Belt Conference Tournament. The Trojans face FIU in the opening round on Wednesday.
“Training and preparation for the tournament has been really great,” said head coach Chris Bentley. “The girls have been in great spirits, and the whole team is really excited about getting a second crack at FIU.”
Troy (11-7-1, 6-5 Sun Belt) fell to FIU earlier this season at home, 2-0 in the Trojans' first conference loss of 2010. The Trojans will enter the tournament after winning their final regular season game, and winning two of their last three matches to earn the fifth seed.
The Trojans are looking to utilize that momentum as they seek revenge against the Golden Panthers, and hope to reach further into the tournament than any other Troy team before. This year marks the third trip to the conference tournament for the Trojans, and the previous two have never exceeded the first round of the conference tournament.
FIU (10-8-1, 7-4 Sun Belt) enters the tournament as the fourth seed after closing out their regular season with a victory.
“We feel like we didn't put out our best effort against them the first time,” said Bentley. “It's really giving us a second chance to go at a quality team. We expect them to be a conference contender this year, they are one that can win the tournament also and there is no looking past them. We have to go out and do the best we can and we are looking forward to it.”
The fifth-seeded Trojans take on fourth-seeded FIU in the first round of the Sun Belt Conference Tournament at 1 pm on Wednesday. The games will be played on the campus of Western Kentucky University.
