The Trojans had a great day in Birmingham at the NCAA South Regional cross country meet, finishing the season with strong performances from all three competing runners.
Sylvia Chirchir had one of the best races of her senior season, finishing 44th in the field of 186. Chirchir came in with a time of 21:28.96 and was the second runner from the Sun Belt to cross the finish line.
Enock Kirui came through with a great end to his sophomore year with a strong 26th place finish in the field of 147. Kirui was the first Sun Belt runner to cross the finish line and missed the top 25 by only a few seconds. During the last lap, which would have made him eligible for the NCAA National Championship, Enock was able to move up two spots from 28th and pass some strong runners to grab 26th with a time of 31:10.52.
“Enock fought hard throughout the whole race, he went from the season normal 8K to the 10K this week and competed the whole way through to the end,” coach Stephane Hetherington said.
Agnes Kapsoiyo also had a good day on the course, running a time of 22:30.94 and finishing 94th in the field of 186.
“The effort from our runners today was great,” Hetherington said. “Enock and Sylvia had their best races of the season.”
“The performances that Sylvia, Enock and Agnes gave today were great coming off the conference meet,” Troy Director of Track and Field/Cross Country, Jill Lancaster said. “I'm really proud of our runners today and coach Hetherington for a great season.”
Kapsoiyo and Chirchir ran their last race for the Trojans but Kirui will be returning for another season on the course next year at Troy.
