Kirui, Chirchir and Kapsoiyo looking to Finish the Season Strong
The Trojans cross country team will be sending three of its best runners to the NCAA South Regional this weekend in Birmingham.
Enock Kirui, Sylvia Chirchir and Agnes Kpsioyo will represent Troy as a result of their performances this season, which earned them spots in the regional.
“We are delighted to have these athletes represent Troy University and the conference at the NCAA Regional cross country championship,” Troy Director of Track and Field/Cross Country Jill Lancaster said. “They have proven all season they are able to compete with the best.”
Enock Kirui had a great sophomore season, leading the Trojans with two first place finishes, a top five finish at the FSU Invitational and a sixth place finish at the conference meet. That finish earned him all-conference honors. Kirui is poised to do well at this week's race and finish off the season well.
Sylvia Chirchir went into her senior season with high expectations and was able to live up to those by year end. Chirchir ended the season with a first place finish at the Coach “O” Invitational and missed all-conference honors by a few seconds in Bowling Green.
Agnes Kapsoiyo had an outstanding senior season as well, helping the Trojans to numerous top 10 finishes throughout the season, in addition to a pair of home wins for the women's team.
“Their hard work has paid off, as we saw at the conference meet,” coach Stephane Hetherington said. “They have continued to work hard and impress in practice, demonstrating they are ready to compete at the next level.”
The South Regional should be a tough race with the top teams and runners from the region attending. The top ranked team in both the men's and women's races will be Florida State, ranked second and sixth nationally. Alabama enters the event ranked 25th nationally on the men's side and 10th in the region for women. Several other teams are ranked in top 15 in the region.
“We are all excited to go up against many of the finest runners in the country, because I know that is where these three belong,” Hetherington said.
The Trojans will be running against fellow Sun Belt Conference members Florida Atlantic, which is ranked 14th in the region for women, Middle Tennessee, ranked 10th in the region for men, South Alabama, ranked 14th in the region for men, and Florida International.
“We look forward to these athletes duplicating the great finishes that they had in the conference two weeks ago,” Lancaster said.
The races will be start at 9:45 a.m. for the women and 10:45 a.m. for the men.
