Rouchdi Headlines Opening Day Of ITA For Troy

The sophomore moved into the latter rounds of the tournament in both singles and doubles

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - The first day of the 2010 ITA Southeast Regional finished up early Friday evening with several Troy University men's tennis players making moves into the later rounds.
Sophomore Anas Rouchdi worked his way into the Round of 32 with two victories on Friday, as he defeated Tom Puetz of UAB in the opening round 7-6, 3-6, 6-3 to earn his way to the Round of 64. In that round, he defeated Ian Chadwell of Alabama when his opponent retired and Rouchdi up 7-5, 1-0 in the second set.
Branko Weber fell in his first match of the fall, as he dropped a straight-set match to Oliver Borsos of LSU 6-2, 6-2 in the Round of 64. Meanwhile, in the bottom half of the draw, both Sami Ghorbel and Mario Rolemberg lost their opening matches on the day. Ghorbel fell to Samford's Oliver Reynolds in three sets; 6-7 (5), 6-3, 6-1; while Rolemberg fell to Tulane's Rodrigo Rappaccioli 7-6, 6-4 in the opening round.
The only other player in singles play for the Trojans, Jamie Eccleton fell to Louisiana-Lafayette's Yanick Mandl 6-4, 6-1 in his first match for the Trojans of the fall.
Meanwhile, in doubles play on Friday, the Trojans sent three teams into competition and two of the three were able to move on in the competition.
The biggest move of the day came from the team of Sami Ghorbel and Tommy Cundy, as the duo played together for the first time as teammates. The duo, not only won the first match of the tournament, but have moved all the way to the Round of 16 through the first day.
They defeated the team of Igor Santos and Felipe Watanbe of Jacksonville State 8-5 to move one step closer to the quarterfinals of the tournament.
Meanwhile, the team of Weber and Eccleton teamed together for the first time and were able to move into the second round with an 8-2 victory over Eric Matthieson and Axel Sundberg of Jacksonville State. They were then able to move into the Round of 16 with an 8-4 victory over Scott Foster and Carson Kadi of Samford.
The tournament continues Saturday morning on the campus of the University of Alabama. Results will be posted once they become available.
