Draws
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The draws for the 2010 USTA/ITA Regional Championships were released by Samford University on Thursday and three Troy University women will be competing in the championships beginning on Friday.
Although none of the three are seeded, all three were given favorable draws in the opening round in the Main Draw Singles. Karoline Grymel, coming off of a third-place finish in the Singles Flight A in Jacksonville last weekend will face Vivian Polak of ULM in the opening round; with the winner facing either Jackie Kasler of Auburn of 12th-seeded Alex Clay of Alabama in the second round.
Meanwhile, in the middle of the draw, Leonie Guijt - who also finished third at the UNF Tournament last weekend - will face Ebie Wilson of LSU in the opening round. The winner of that match will face either Paula Alvarez Pino of UAB or 15th-seeded Laura Van de Stroet in the second round.
Newcomer Olfa Dhaoui opens the tournament against unseeded Lindsay Dvorak of Tulane; with the winner getting either Giorgia Romeo of UAB or 13th-seeded Keri Frankenberger of LSU.
In doubles action, the Trojans will send just one time and the doubles champion from the UNF Fall Invitational was not given a favorable draw in the opening round. The team of Grymel and Guijt will come out of the gates facing the number one seed in Alexa Guarachi and Courtney McLane of Alabama on the first day of the tournament.
The talent-laden field of the four-day competition will consist of top-notch players from 14 teams. The schools competing in the 2010 USTA-ITA Southern Regional Championships will be Samford, Alabama, Auburn, Jacksonville State, LSU, Louisiana-Lafayette, Louisiana-Monroe, Mississippi State, Ole Miss, Southern Mississippi, South Alabama, Troy, Tulane and UAB.
Play will begin at 8:30 a.m. (CDT) on Friday and Saturday. Sunday's competition will start at 9 a.m., while Monday's championship matches will begin at a time that is yet to be determined.
Results will be posted once they become available from Samford.
