TROY, Ala. – The Troy University soccer team prepares for their final home game Thursday against WKU, with the Lady Toppers coming in as one of the top teams in the league.
Troy (9-6-1, 4-4 Sun Belt) enters this week off of a disappointing Sun Belt loss to Arkansas State, who scored in the final minutes of the match to win. However, the Trojans are looking for redemption as they enter their final three matches of the 2010 regular season schedule.
“We're coming off a tough weekend, this last weekend,” said head coach Chris Bentley. "We had a good result on Friday then, on Sunday our effort wasn't great. The girls didn't come out mentally prepared. It wasn't a lack of talent, it was really a lack of effort which is unfortunate.”
The Trojans are closing in on the end of their regular season and conference schedule. Troy is currently sixth in the Sun Belt Conference, but victories against Western Kentucky (8-5-2, 6-2) and Middle Tennessee (9-8, 6-2) this weekend would propel the Trojans into a higher seed in the conference standings.
Currently the Trojans sit a game ahead of Florida Atlantic, Louisiana-Lafayette and Arkansas State; holding the tiebreakers over Florida Atlantic and Louisiana-Lafayette due to head-to-head competition.
“We have to put out an exceptional amount of effort in each game in this conference to be competitive, and this week our focus has to be on that,” Bentley said. “We have a couple of injuries to deal with which makes things interesting, but ultimately we have to put it all together this week.”
This weekend's matches will be a true challenge for the Trojans as both opponents come in battling for the second seed, having won three consecutive matches.
“Thursday is going to be a tough game here at home and then on Sunday going up to Middle Tennessee is going to be tough as well,” said Bentley. “Both teams are competing for a conference championship right now, and that is something we have to put in our mind as well and we are going to have to compete and be ready.”
The Trojans will hit the pitch in their last 2010 regular season match in the Trojan Soccer Complex on Thursday at 1 p.m. against Western Kentucky. The match can be seen on All-Access via TroyTrojans.com. Admission to all soccer matches is free.
