Troy Women Return to Action at Austin Peay

After a week away from competition, the Troy University women's golf team will return to competition on Monday at the F&M Bank APSU Intercollegiate at Clarksville Country Club.
The event will feature single 18-hole rounds each day and the Trojans will be competing against 11 other teams.
Coach Matt Terry is looking for his team to avoid some of the big mistakes that cost them in their last tournament at South Florida.
“We are coming off a couple of good tournaments with a victory and a 12th place finish, but we are going to have to be a lot cleaner with our play with less doubles and triples,” Terry said. “We can afford some bogeys because we are making birdies, but we have to find a way to stay away from those others.”
The Trojans come into the tournament with a ranking of 115 in the nation, putting them as the second ranked team in the field, behind only their in-state rivals from Jacksonville State. The focus will be on topping the Gamecocks because doing that will give the team its best chance for another tournament win.
“We are looking forward to continuing our rivalry with them,” Terry said. “Clarksville Country Club is a great, old-style, country club with bent grass greens that will be quick. I am looking forward to seeing the girls play well.”
The Trojans will go into the tournament without freshman Signy Arnorsdottir, who is in Argentina playing for Iceland in the World Amateur Team Championships. That event runs Wednesday through Saturday for four rounds of competition.
“We'll have Haley Lawrence, Sofia Bjorkman, Liz Balkcom, Annelies Anderson and Sara Fennvick in the lineup this week, so it will be a totally different look for us,” Terry said. “Some of the girls are playing well, hitting the ball well. I know they had some really good practices while the men have been on the road.”
Terry said he is especially looking forward to seeing how Bjorkman and Lawrence play in the tournament, with a chance to make a move up the national rankings.
“Sofia and Haley are both ranked high in the nation due to the good finishes they have had,” Terry said. “If we can clean up some of the problems they have had with doubles and triples, they have a chance to really move up. If they do that, they will both have an opportunity to win this week.”
The event will open on Monday with 18 holes of play on the par 72 layout that covers 5,960 yards. The tournament will conclude with another 18 holes on Tuesday.
“It is only a 36 hole event, so they can use all of their mental and physical energy in one round each day and not have to hold anything back like they would on a day when they have to play 36 holes,” Terry said. “I am looking forward to seeing what they can do and seeing them get after it.”
