Trojans Win Early Matches at UNF Fall Invitational

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The opening day of the 2010 UNF Hampton Inn 9A & Baymeadows Fall Invitational drew to a close late Friday evening with early success for the Trojans on the day.
In singles play, top-seeded Karoline Grymel cruised to an opening round victory over Iris Rendon of Florida Gulf Coast 6-1, 6-2. However, she fell in the semifinals to North Florida's Danielle Day in three sets. She fell on her opponent's home court 5-7, 6-1, 7-5 to fall into the third place match; facing second-seeded Taylor Morgan of Samford at 12 noon on Saturday.
In Singles Flight B, second-seeded Leonie Guijt won her opening match over Jennifer Miller of Stetson 7-5, 6-1; before falling to North Florida's Victoria Krook 6-4, 6-3 in the semifinals. With the loss, Guijt falls into the third place match where she will face Melissa Narzissenfeld at 12 noon on Saturday.
In Singles Flight C, Gabriella Veiga fell in her opening match to Melanie Aguirre of North Florida 6-0, 6-1; before bouncing back to win in the consolation semifinals. With her 6-3, 6-4 victory over top-seeded Lindsey Mallory of Samford, she will face Morgan Bechtel of Florida Gulf Coast at 2 pm Saturday afternoon.
In doubles play, Veiga fell in her opening round match as she teamed with a member of the Jacksonville University team. The duo fell to Aguirre and Sierra Sullivan 8-5; and will now face the team of Narzissenfeld and Mandic of Florida Gulf Coast in the consolation semifinals at 9 am on Saturday.
Meanwhile in Doubles Flight A, the team of Grymel and Guijt cruised to an 8-2 victory over Eve Castaing and Gabriela Haddad in the opening round. The second-seeded duo will face the team of Andrie Meiring and Rebecca Kirven at 9 am on Saturday in the championship semifinals.
The tournament concludes Saturday afternoon.
